I am having my garage wired for my new welder Hobart Handler 187. Any way is you look at the spec. sheet it says 20.5 amps at 230volts. Should and could i just put in a 30amp breaker hookup system for this. heres the link http://www.hobartwelders.com/product...andler_187.pdf
I wouldn't go any less than a 30 amp (double pole) breaker and wire (10-2). 30 amps should do you just fine. Also you need to look at the total capacity of your garage circuit panel (if applicable). I had a garage that had 60 amps total protection. One day while I was welding with the A/C blowing, the air compressor kicked on and I was instantly in the dark.
If it's rated at 20.5 amps, I would hope that the cord is rated for 30 amps. Sometimes you install your own cord, but I just double checked and it includes a cord. I would wait until you have the welder before you get too carried away wiring up the outlet. Best to only have to do it once...
Probably has one of those goofy 25amp plugs. I went with 30amp dryer plugs on both my welder and compressor.
Generally, you should go with the rated breaker for the plug, or the next higher. If there are multiple plugs on the one circuit, check your codes or rewire to have one plug per breaker.
FWIW, when I wired my shop I ran quad boxes every 4 feet, 4 feet above the floor with the left side of each box being a duplex 20a 120v outlet on separate ciruits alternating every other box and the right side a duplex 20a 240v. That covers most of what I will use in there but for the overkill I installed a 50a range outlet on #8ga. wire with a 40 a breaker for a welder I don't yet own (ah, wishes and saving $$$) which should cover a number of high current applications that may arise. That circuit would cover a lot of welders and I still have the option of bumping the breakers up by 10a if I need to. Go bigger than you need right now. My .02Cdn.
