I need help. i have a 1988 bronco 300 i6 with 5 speed, The engine is new - not a rebuild. Has headers, free flow exhaust, throttle body spacer, cold air intake. Cam is from Cliffords with their valve springs. I shift about 2,000 rpm and I can only get about 11 mpg in town and 12 to 13 on highway- any suggestions
Have you checked simple things, like changing the cap/rotor/fuel filter, etc? I know the engine is new, but sometimes these things might just be switched from one engine to the next.
Also, check to be sure the parking brake isn't sticking, that'll really put some drag on your system.
With your setup, 11 isn't SUPER bad in town, but you should be getting around 13 - 14. On the highway, you should be getting 17 - 20, esp with a new engine and a 5 speed.
This might also be better posted over on the 300 forum: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/forum52
You can also do some preliminary searches over on that forum, as MPG are discussed a lot.
the new engine has about 2500 miles on it. it is EFI speed density. I've thought about going to MAF and have some of the parts. I could live with around 13mpg in town and 16 to 17 on highway. I just can't figure out why I don't see much change between highway and city. The engine also runs on the cold side of the normal range and the oil pressure is on the high side - thanks
what temp Tstat did you install? the cam you installed by clifford was it a speed density friendly cam? 2500 miles is hardly broke in yet. are you following the proper break in procedures on the motor? I would also pull codes to see what the computer thinks is going on. fordfuelinjection.com has instructions on this process using a paperclip
