Brake jobe gone wrong!!

Over the weekend I did a front brake job on my 02 Excursion. Replaced rotors with Powerslot Cryos and used Hawk LTS pads. All went well enough to start, really had to beat the old rotors to free em up, but after re-assembly the test drive revealed a major pull to the left. Removed tires and calipers again, replaced all for slide pins with new ones, checked calipers, free of any build up and no sign of leaks, pistons seem to work freely. Test drove, slightly better. Swapped pads from side to side, no change. So much for trying to save a few bucks doin it myself!

Yeah, I thought so also, that's why I replaced all four slide pins. This made it a little better, but it still pulls to the left

Where the rotors new? The pads being used rings the bells with myself. I have not needed a brake job yet, but have been reading all the posts about them and problems. The biggest seems to be bedding in the brakes properly. With that, I would think that the used pads would have a harder time with this if at all possible. I would always replace with new pads when replacing rotors or even resurfacing. Just my 2 bits.

Rotors and pads all new, Powerslot cryo rotors amd Hawk LTS pads. Followed the correct bedding procedure found on Hawk website. Repeated bedding procedure every time I tore brakes apart to try something different. Still pulls Left

HMMM. Just when reading your first post the wording made it sound like (used hawk pads)

I would pull off the calipers and push back the cylinders, and then have someone push the brake pedal to check them out properly. I would start there just to make sure. I know you said they look ok, but this way they check out. Make sure you pull the cap off the resovoir because when pushing the cylinders back you may get overspillage on brake fluid. Might just be a good time to flush out brake fluid and replace also.

That was the last thing I did this morning, removed calipers, cleaned them up, pushed back pistons, applied brakes to make sure both pistons were working and re installed everything. Road test waas the same, still pulls left

Does it pull left all the time or when you apply the brakes?

Brakes off, it will pull toward a dragging caliper. (go left when left side drags)
Brakes on, it will pull away from a non-functioning caliper. (go left when right side does less work)

When you pushed the pistons in the calipers did you get a lil crazy with squeezing em all the way down? If you get too excited and cram em down too hard they tend to start sticking and doing funny stuff.

At this point I think you have a couple options. First I dont think it will do anything, but bleeding is cheap and easy and maybe somehow you will get lucky and it'll help.

Second, theres a chance when you were flexing those rubber hoses on the calipers around the interiors deteriorated and is causing problems iwth fluid passing through them. Usually you end up with a caliper thats stuck dragging not failing to grab though so thats kinda unlikely as well.

Really though, I think your gonna need one new caliper. I'd really do both while your in there though if you have the cash. How many miles on these?

Just for kicks check out the rear calipers to see what kinda shape the pins are in before you do anything else though.

The calipers have around 130,000, I assume they are the originals. Now I have to wait for the snow to stop so I can resume my project!

I am pretty sure its not the rears, I did them about a month ago and had no pulling issues until I did the front, and the pulling is really evident in the steering wheel.

When you squeezed the pistons back into the calipers, did you open up the bleeder, or did you push the fluid back into the brake system? I see this all the time with results as you describe. Anytime you need to service the brakes, do not push the fluid back through the ABS components, you can damage them with trash or if you force the fluid back to fast.

Did you clean & re-lube the clips that hold the pads in the carrier?

The grime, corrosion, or paint on the pads could be keeping the pads from moving easily.

Yes I cleaned the clips and everything else I could get to before re-assembly, as far as pushing the pistons back, yes I did open the resevoir cap and push the remaining fluid back into the system, that is how my shop manual said to do it. What should I check for in the ABS system for any damage, or am I screwed?
