Hey, looking for a step by step how to remove the rear window out of a 95 F150, (im assuming its the same 80-96) and installing a new (used) one. My new truck has solid back glass, and i want a rear slider! I was able to pick a used one up cheap local, but ive never replaced the window before, and dont want to break anything. Thanks for any help!
it's not too bad. you have to remove the top and bottom trim strip on the inside. you have to loosen the side panels, to make some room. take 2 medium size screwdrivers[they make a tool, but I'm cheap] and start to pry the rubber away from the cab on the inside. this is similar to removeing the door molding. you start on 1 corner, and work your way around.just place the screwdrivers in between the cab wall, and the rubber, and pry the rubber away from the cab with a rolling motion.someone on the outside can hold thier hand on the glass outside to keep in from dropping down between the cab and bed when you have the rubber pried almost all the way around.when you go to put it back in, if you have a ford slider, you need the rubber with the lock strip. aftermarket uses your stock rubber. on the ford unit, remove the lock strip. and set asside.make sure your rubber is on the window right, and put a soapy water solution inside the track that goes on the cab. some people use wd 40, but I don't because it's hard to clean up. take a piece of cotton cloths line, and put it inside of tho track, with about 2' of both ends sticking out the bottom. set the 2 ends of rope inside the cab, and put the window where it goes. have your helper outside, you inside. helper with 1 hand hold window against cab, other hand where rope is.have him apply steady pressure, not hard, and you start pulling on the rope. as you pull the rope, the rubber starts to go over the cab lip. he needs to follow you all the way where ever the rope is.once the rubber is on the cab lip and not rolled over undernieth, your done and can put your trim back. factory slider trim, put some soapy water in where the lock strip was, and re-insert strip. I don't know how to put in a drawing, so I hope I have told you what to do. If you have any problems, just ask I'll try to help
It's not really difficult, but having a few extra hands to help will be good. First hard step is getting the old window popped out(rubber and all). Using a couple screwdrivers start on inside and work rubber towards the outside of truck. You'll need a few wedges to keep it pushed out as you work across the top. Don't go crazy, as you don't want to break the glass. Once you get it started just keep going and it will soon pop out fully. Use some tape or cloth to keep from scratching stuff.
Get new window and install rubber around it, get some nice rope/string(1/4" or so dia.) and run it around the groove. Start the rope at bottom center, run around it fully to bottom center again. Have someone stand in bed, holding window against truck while you work inside. You can leave the slider open to help too. Have them push the window tight at bottom center and you pull the string(work one side then the other) to help the rubber lip over the edge into the cab. Keep pushing firmly on the outside as you slowly work the string(WD40 sometimes helps let stuff slide easier). Go around the whole window.
Presto, you now have a new slider.
You might end up having to pull it out and re-string it. It's not hard, but doing your first it might give you fits. It will go in.
You'll want to lube the gasket to help it slip against the lip of the cab.
I always used KY but it was recommended to try Goop waterless hand cleaner.
WD40 is not enough I think.
BTW, I used braided pull starter cord since that is what I had. It worked well.
