81 Interior Trim Colors

Where are the interior trim codes found on a 81 F100? I know it states the exterior colors on the tag inside the door though not sure which numbers they are referring to.

Check under your seat. Sometimes they tuck a buildsheet between the springs and seat foam. Sometimes its behind the seat. I think different plants stuck them different places.

Mine was under the rubber floor mat.The truck leaked water before I got it,and it got under the rubber mat,and deteriorated 3/4 of my build sheet.

It's a part of the body code.

The First Code is the seat trim.

The Second Code is the interior color.

The Third Code is the body type.

Post the body code and I can decode it for you.

I will find that body code where? I have a metal tag with numbers and codes screwed to the bed of the truck on the passenger side would that be it?

Actually it's on the picture above, on the safety certification lable.

Sorry, I missed it before. Getting old. LOL.

BODY CODE: AT4

A = Light Truck Custom Bench - Vinyl seat.

T = Interior Color = Nutmeg.

4 = Styleside pickup.

The Exterior colors are missing from this lable. (Which is unusual). However I notice that it was a Special Order, this might explain why. There should be two sets of numbers after the exterior pain code marking. Which there isn't.

The rest of the lable decodes as.

WB = Wheel Base = 117"

Type/GVW = F100 = 4700 max GVW
Trans Code B = Clark four speed overdrive.

Axle 14 = 3.00 ratio ford Rear end. Non-limited slip. Capacity #3750

Vin Number Decode:

1FTCF10D3BUA62833

1FT = Ford USA

C = GVWR Class = 4,001 to 5,000 Lbs.

F10 = F-100 Regular Cab Pickup 4x2

D = 255 V8 Engine. 4.2L Gas

3 = Check Digit

B = Year Model = 1981

U = Plant of manufacture = Louiseville

A62833 = Production sequence number.

Hope this helps.

The Closest and best Guess I could make of the Exterior Color of your truck is this.

Medium Fawn Glow Metallic = Code 55

Wimbeldon White = Code 9A

I can only Guess at the exterior color because of it being absent on the lable above, and the fact that digital Photography can change the tint of the picture, as well as my literature is only an aproximation of the true colors.

But the exterior colors are my best guess.

Thanks for the info. What tells it is special order? I kinda always thought the custom was like the bottom of the line but this truck as all the two-tone trim and is painted I believe they call it sand poly (gold) and white. This truck looked like it had about 300K miles on it when I bought it back in about 88 or 89. The engine that was in it not the original shattered a piston so I put another 302 in it and has got another 100K on it now and this is just a work truck..lol. I have not done much to it but drive it but since I am off now I am trying to catch up on some of the things that have been negelected. I have a 81 sales pamplet and my truck looks like the green and white ranger with the 5 slot aluminum rims. I guess a custom could be ordered with different trim packages if someone wanted that. How where you to figure the paint codes out when they just left them off as they did? The other tag I mentioned is screwed the the passenger side pickup bed and got painted half gold and half white it was right where they broke the two-tone paint it reads as follows: I tried to show it like it is on the tag but it keeps bringing all it back to the left margin.

On the inside dooor tag shown above I guess all those numbers to the far right are the DSO code? If that is so what are the T H for on the lower bottom line right under where it has DSO?
Again thanks for the information.

Custom was what the name implied. They could be Custom ordered with every option avaliable, within reason, or come with no options at all.

The 302 is not the original engine in this truck. It originally had the 255 V8. 4.2L engine. It's a good thing a 302 5.0L was transplanted in it's place, because the 255 was a very poor engine, in my opinion.

Not different trim packages, but with as many options or more options than the Ranger has as a baseline. They did away with the custom for the 1982-1986 models to force you to buy a higher trim line for certain options. The CUSTOM was brought back in 1987, dropped later, brough back in 1992, and dropped yet again, and hasn't been back since the writing of this.

How where you to figure the paint codes out when they just left them off as they did?
I had to guess as I said above. I'd say it was 65 or 70% accurate. Which leaves a good deal of error margin, but the best I can do.

I have the 1981 light truck service manual, and specifications. I used the brochure that has paint chips in it, and looked up their name in the book to get the codes. The problem is the factors of error. The tint in the manual, the tint of my monitor, the tint of the digital photo, even my eyes, can contribute to the error factor.

The other tag I mentioned is screwed the the passenger side pickup bed and got painted half gold and half white it was right where they broke the two-tone paint it reads as follows: I tried to show it like it is on the tag but it keeps bringing all it back to the left margin.

That is a buck tag for the box. Placed there on manufacture. There is no way to decode it really. But I do recognise the wheelbase, and vin number

On the inside dooor tag shown above I guess all those numbers to the far right are the DSO code? If that is so what are the T H for on the lower bottom line right under where it has DSO?
Again I'm not familiar with those letters below the DSO Code.

I know it was special ordered, because the DSO code would only be two digits if it wasn't. Again no way to decode it.

Ford may have info on it still, if you called them and asked for a build sheet. Do a search about getting a build sheet.

Hope this helps.

Well I was able to get one of the reports from Ford and it seems they don't know what the exterior paint colors where themselves. Anyway I thought they would know if anyone did but the rest matched up pretty well. Thanks for all the info.
