I had this problem for about a year. 2 weeks ago the wrist pin got loose and busted the piston and the block. About 3 weeks before it blew the noise became very erratic and i knew something was about to go. I dont know what to tell you about pin pointing the exact cause but i wouldnt put it past being something in the head. i put a different engine in using the same heads and still have the same noise. Your case may be different. To change the lifters you have to take the intake and valve covers off. Loosen up the rocker arms and take the pushrods out and then you can pull the lifters out.

thanks i was thinkin maybe if its the wrist pin if taking the boot off of a plug one by one wouldnt that cause the noise to stop since there wouldnt really be a load on the piston idk i was just thinking about ways to check and if its a lifter would i just replace them
