Welcome the FTE...

The best setup for the money is the 6637 filter mod. Essentially you remove the stock filter and box and and a section of 4" pipe and the filter. There are several different types of this filter that you can get, but the "6637" from NAPA is the "do it yourself" mod.

You are correct with the K&N filters. They let the fine dust particles in harming the impeller side of the turbo.

Run a search of the 6637 and you will get plenty of hits.

AFE seems to be the preference. That or a Wix 6637(? think thats the right number) which is paper.

You have a drop in or an intake kit? Basically anything is better than a KN, I run an aFe, but I know some that like their AEM's and SB filters too.

I was thinking about doing this to mine, but have some second thoughts after running a search engine using this tymar-diy-napa-6637 as the search string. Check it out and some of you guru's give us the low down.

Not sure I understand. Are you having second thoughts about the Tymar? I searched but didn't see any info that would you away from it. Let me know what your thoughts are and I can provide some info that would help you out.

Once your there scroll down and read the discussion. Some of the comments made give me some concern.

for one changing the air filter will not cause turbo surge.
2, that was a super duty guy complaining of it, they have surge issues because they have smaller turbos then we do

Joe is right. They are talking about turbo surge and its not good but it has nothing to do with the filter, its a turbo issue. They just could not hear it with the stock filter in there.

Have my 1986 F150 just about ready to test fire up. Delivered my 1990 F150 to the new owner in Pawnee Rock , and picked up it's replacement that I traded for (My '86 is in the background)
