Now look, this bailout sh..t has to stop and this may be the perfect place to say thats it.
I guess the p.o. will soon run out of money and they will want a bailout.
Anymore bailouts should be voted on by the voters and I say NO MORE.
I'm with you there. With the exception of a couple magazines and the occasional card or letter, the rest of my U.S. mail is bills or junk. The bills could probably all be sent electronically and the junk they can keep. Cut mail delivery to five days a week (or four, or three) and go from there.
I don't want to see anyone lose a job but through normal attrition and maybe a buyout, the number of employees could be greatly reduced to meet the new schedule.
Another idea would be to outright BAN any unsolicited commercial mail. I recycle unopened well over half of everything that comes in my mailbox.

Although I like your ideas of junk mail reduction, that would just reduce USPS revenue. I to recycle at least 75% of the stuff that comes to my house.
This may be a solution......Let everyone with a bonified E-mail account elect to get their mail from the internet. Also elect to HAVE NO third class mail delivered and millions would be saved. I asked the maillady once if she would just drop the third class mail into a trash can under my regular box to save me the trouble and she said she couldnt. WHY NOT? If I dont want junk mail why do I have to get it? It would save alot of time and gas to just leave all my third class mail in the dumpster behind the post office. In fact they could sell it to get money.

Unfortunate side effect but they are delivering millions of pounds of stuff that nobody wants and costs taxpayers no telling how much money to dispose of. I should be able to legitimately opt out of unsolicited mailings. I recently refinanced my mortgage and have received (no kidding) 20 to 30 pieces of junk mail offering to sell me insurance and other products I have no use for. All because these companies troll the registry of deeds. Why should that be my responsibility to dispose of?
Now, when they are nice enough to send a postage paid reply envelope, I am nice enough to send most of the stuff back to them......
The post office needs to stop competing with private companies. Why do they offer services that can be found from UPS and FedEx etc... Their real problem is they were using the money from regular mail services to run their package services so they could undercut everyone elses prices, now they have been told that they must at least break even on each item they handle. I think they should drop services such as overnight package delivery etc... that are offered by private sector companies.
You know, you can't even begin to comment on the Post Office mess unless you know the reason behind "foregone revenue". It is been a mess ever since that guy (forget his name Runyon?) from the TVA tried to get the USPS on track.
Search for "foregone revenue" on Yahoo and the 1st link is:
I handle everything for the most part online.
I do some handwritten letters but those who appreciate them are getting to old to read them.
In the mid nineties my girls dad after retiring from the army took over in the posts environmental division. I would take the girls to the recycle center and there would be ten to twenty huge "rollaways" (I cannot think of what they are called but huge plastic containers on wheels) full of undeliverable mail. The girls would go through it and take all the free Dr Suess books and give them to the shelter or pediatric ward, they would scrounge all the pennies from the columbia house promotions and give those to the SPCA, the magazines were taken to the hospital or rest homes. This was twice a week. I have never seen so much "junk" mail. The military post office never even delivered it because of the clutter in the small family unit boxes they serviced. Seeing all the junk mail in one spot was overwhelming and that was just from the base.
I have written to wal mart asking they take my address from their mailing list to no avail. I am so tired of the ads that are delivered each week to the motel. I just check my mail and drive by the dumpster and chuck it. That is alot of money wasted that could go somewhere else.
I think that cutting delivery to five days a week is a good idea, really... but if I were in charge, I'd not cut out Saturdays. Think about this: if a letter gets mailed on Wednesday or Thursday, it's possible that it could reach you on Saturday, but if there's no delivery, you have to wait until Monday to get it. I think the better solution would to be cut out a delivery day in the middle of the week (Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday). I think Tuesday would be the best option, since there's already no delivery or pickup on Sundays, any mail you drop in a box on Sunday does'nt get picked up until Monday.
Think about it... what day do you usually get the LEAST amount of mail? If you're like me, it's in the middle of the week.

Just my two cents... take it for what it's worth.
My thoughts exactly. I usually have no mail on Tuesday and Wednesday it's coupons along with the free classified ads of the local paper which comes out two days a week. They could just delay that stuff till Thursday or so.
well, I eliminated a bunch of my junk mail by opening the envelopes, taking out the insertions and writing "NOT INTERESTED - PLEASE REMOVE MY NAME AND ADDRESS" and put it back in their POSTAGE PAID envelope and sent it back to them.......
my junk mail was reduced by nearly 90 percent after doing this for about 3 months!!
barely any junk mail now.....AND.....when I get it, I do the same as described above, until they get the mesage!!!!!

Great idea P1...Ray...I've been doing this for years...but...I don't tell them I'm not interested. I just make sure my name/address or anything that can identify me is removed. I know...I know...it's about time I got a life...but it's fun!!!
FYI...the company that gets their postage paid stuff back is on the hook for more than straight postage...there are upcharges for special handling and billing.
Of course...my solution does not address the environmental issues raised. For what it's worth...I recycle everything that can't be sent back.
