Clunk When Shifting/Engaging Clutch
History: Clutch and Throwout Bearing replaced August '08. Clutch engaged roughly when starting out in first and reverse, and sometimes in second if at slower speed. Transmission also a bit noisier than before. Clutch problem has resolved itself, but noise is still present.
Current problem: there is a *clunk* when I release the clutch and the transmission engages the driveshaft -- in almost any gear.
I can actually turn the driveshaft by hand. Just a little bit (0.25" if measuring on the shaft itself), but I've been assured I shouldn't be able to do this. The entire shaft from its exit at the transmission to its entry at the rear end turns. My dad used a "shop stethoscope" to listen to the rear end (fine), u-joints (they're fine) and the tail end of the transmission. The clunk is definitely in there.
What might this be?
Thanks in advance.
Steve
