I'm looking to buy a '04-'06 F150 with 5.4 Triton, ext cab, 4x4, tow package. I'm doing a lot of reading up on these trucks. The one thing that sticks out about these is the problem with the spark plugs breaking off when trying to change them. Has Ford rectified this or are they covering this somehow? Can you guys give me some insight to this issue?
I changed mine at 41k with no issues...but I followed the TSB. I think the issue is very real, but seems blown out of proportion. BUT if your not careful you could make a simple sparkplug change turn into a real nightmare.
If you follow the TSB and be careful hopefully you won't have any issues. Do some searches....you'll find a ton of threads on this.

Best insight to this issue, is a Bucket of Luck
or get a '08
An '08 is out of my budget, and I don't believe in luck.
It looks like there's a tool to get the job done. I suppose a guy might still break one or six of them, but once they're out and you've replaced with Champion plugs and a little high temp anti-sieze then the pain is over. Would there be any other reason to stay away from, say, an '04 FX4 supercab?
I was under the impression it was the 02-03 motors they fixed the heads on the 04
Agreed the 3-valve 5.4 has different heads, obviously, and the spark plug design changed. Unfortunately, they went from having spark plugs blow out to spark plugs seizing in place. In late 2007 they again changed the spark plug design, sorry I don’t know the exact date, whether or not that fixed everything only time will tell. It’s also important to note that they still made the 2 valve 5.4 in 2004 as well, though IIRC those also experienced a design change in the form of more threads a year or two earlier.
