Is it OK to tow in OD? I have used OD to tow as long as the engine doesn't hunt between 3rd and OD. But, I've heard that regardless of hunting, the tranny will overheat just by towing in OD..
The transmission was designed to tow in overdrive. Your owner's manual states that you should tow in overdrive unless it is shifting in and out of overdrive frequently. You're operating the transmission as Ford designed it.
There were problems in the 70s and 80s with overdrive transmissions overheating while towing in overdrive. That's been fixed.
I tow a 32' boat that weighs 12,000#... I use overdrive so long as it's not shifting in and out often. I use the towing program on the Superchips programmer as well... without it OD will not stay engaged on the interstate.
