starter troubles
<!-- BEGIN TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_start --><!-- END TEMPLATE: ad_showthread_firstpost_start -->ok i recently bought a 1991 f20 with the 7.3 liter diesel and it was missing both batteries and the siloniod on the firewall i have never dealt with diesels before and was wondering if anyone could help me there is a spot on the firewall for a silonoid so i bolted 1 up there put batteries in it but i looked and the starter has a silonoid on top of it the main power wire for the starter seems as if it goes directly to the battery post and there is no wire to go to the firewall silonoid, i have no idea how it should be wired i have searched manuals and they either only cover the deisel engine or the ones who do mention silonoids are for gas engines if anyone has a diagram of how it should be wired for the 2 silonoids i would greatly appreciate it if so please email the diagram/pictures any other help to chicopinky@verizon.net again thank everyone for thier help and understanding
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.
How many wires do you have loose the the solenoid location?
Ford used that as a power distribution point.
There should be a power wire from the battery positive terminal to one of the large terminals on the fender mounted solenoid.
The opposite large terminal will have the trigger wire for the starter mounted solenoid on it.
Trigger wire from the key for the upper solenoid should be blue with a red stripe.
Very common for two or three other wires to be on the battery hot wire terminal.
Can you take a picture of what you have there and upload it to your gallery?
Haynes Ford Pickups and Bronco 1980 thru 1996 has wiring diagrams.
Book number 36058
Autozone also has some diagrams online, not sure about that specific area though.
