Question 9" axle removal ?

I CANNOT get this thing to slide out......

I'm tryin' to get this rear axle assembly apart to rebuild it for my '56 f100 and was told it came out of a '70 F100..

All the nuts are off the center section & pinion housings and tapped them
a little loose...

ONE drum side complety disassembled...and...NOTHIN'...stuck...

...will NOT slide out...

any ideas?......

im confused, are the axles stuck or the center section? if the axles are stuck make sure the 4 nuts are off both axle flanges (11/16 or 3/4 nuts) after that i flip the drums around backwards and start 2 lugs loosely, use the drums as a slide hammer to pop the axles out. then the center section only needs the nuts around the big outer edge to come off, not the pinion nuts. after that tap a prybar or something between to break the seal from the housing. they are usually tough but after that its all gravy.

Once the axles are out, you can put a bottle jack under the pinion and jack S-L-O-W-L-Y to break it loose.

Have a pan ready for the Exxon-Valdez oil flow when it comes undone.

Exclamation stubborn axles...

...let me try this again...I was a little tired & wore out yesterday...

This 9" I'm tryin' to rebuild is for my '56 Effie and it's my FIRST 9...

I have one side with the drum, complete brake assembly & parking
brake cable removed...

All the fasteners are out except for the T-bolts remaining in the axle
tube end flange (of course)...

The axle retainer plate is loose and the backing plate is also loose...

The axle spins freely with NO horizontal movement...

I just thru in the part about the center section and pinion 'cause I
had been gettin' beat up by this thing for so long I pulled all the nuts
off them just to make it look like I accomplished something ......

For the record..ALL the fasteners were removed with a ratchet...
Nothin' required an air-tool...like I said this is my first time tearin'
down a nine and I didn't want to screw it up...

The bolt spacing is about 3.5" X 2" on the T-bolts in the picture below...

...not sure if that might make this a late model BIG Ford (Torino) ?

...or if it makes any difference which hammer I should use...

So you can't get the axles out?

Using a long bolt, big washers, and a piece of pipe, you can make a slide hammer to fasten to that big hole in the axle flange. You can try pounding on the end of the axle a couple of times to loosen things up too.

Axles can be stubborn as the spline engagement into the carrier is tight. And, you will be pulling the bearing out of the end of the axle as well. A little rust goes a long way there.

Tighten the carrier bolts back up too, at least a couple on each side, so that the weight of the carrier isn't causing a bind on the axles.

Thumbs up Got it...

...it finally gave up......just kept at it & pop..it was out...

Had a heck of a time gettin' the drum off the other side last
nite...had to put some heat to the insde if the axle-tube flange
and then give it a "bell-ringer" BFH blast and the drum just popped
loose from the shoes & axle...

Goin' out now to dis-assemble the rest and the get goin' on the
center section...

Check back for updates...

THANKS everyone for the assistance......

Thumbs up Good NewZ...

Dis-assembly is complete......finally...damn thing gave up the
ghost...

Was hopin' for 31-spline but...nope...they're 28-splne axles......
Fine by me......

This 9" rear is kinda strange... numbers on the outside are of
the casting: C5AW- Build date looks like CF29: June 29th '63???

Side drain plug...axle flange has 1 dimple in the middle & 1 hole each side.

2 1/2" wide brake shoes with 11" drums...

INSIDE the pumpkin...

Casting number on center section: C7AW-E 38

Casting number on ring gear: C6AW- and then nothing...

I "think" I counted about 70 teeth on the ring gear...???......

Numbers on the axle bearing:

F-208A-KK
FPD
USA
Approx. 3.1496 Dia.

And here's the C7AW-E 38...
