I've got a bit of an irritating at best issue. My ABS light is constantly lit, and the speedo occilates between 0 and my true speed. When it first started, i tried replacing the sensor on the rear diff. with one from a parts house. Didn't make a lick of difference, so I splurged, went and bought a Motorcraft one, still nothing. Every once in a while when driving, the speedo likes to completely give up. But if I push the clutch in, shut the motor off, and restart, it comes back. Well back to bouncing anyway. Any ideas of what has possessed my truck.
there is a sensor on the tranny also that is prone to failure, called a VSS; however you will usually get a SES light. the PCM compares both signals for ABS airbags overdrive, speedo and idle. There isn't a cable you can replace anymore as the truck is drive by wires.
Get someone to pull codes for you, the scanner at the local parts place won't read all the codes the diesels use.
I'm aware that the parts house can't pull the codes. I tried to have the stealer pull them yesterday, but they thought they should require an appointment. I didn't have that kind of time, so i left, but I may have to resort to that, just don't want to know what they can charge just to plug in a computer. Would the VSS on the tranny cause this, or is there even one on a 6-speed. And if so, where is it? There is no chance that somehow the front wheel sensors could be causing this is there? Ron, the rear VSS has been replaced twice with no change, so I'm thinking that isn't it. If it is, I have really bad luck with sensors. Is the ABS control module prone to failure, or does it even have anything to do with the speed signal? How does this truck process the signal that its getting from the sensors?
maybe try cleaning and making sure you got a good connection on the rear diff. mine done what you are describing and that was it, i know you replaced it, but as easy as it is to get to it might be worth trying again. it is a lot easier to get to than the ones on the tranny. if you know anyone with a programmer some of them read codes, i can use the programer off of my 99 to read the codes on my 02.
