Using Laptop w/OBD2USB adapter & scanner software...
Hi Everyone,
I have been looking at the ELM-5 USB adapter, Part number: 421200, and software for possible use with my onboard laptop as an alternate means of instrumentation as opposed to a clutter of gauges. As I constantly have the laptop running onboard for GPS maping and wireless comminication, it would seem to me that it would be a far superior system and eliminate the clutter and difficult installation of guages. There would also be the added feature of real time recording and logging of all functions.
I have written to the folks at Scan Tool to get a more detailed description of their software's capabilities. So far as I can tell from what I have read, their software should do what I want but I would want to be sure before I buy it.
Has anyone here used their system and software? If so I would like to know what it's full capabilities are in specific regard to the 6.0L PS.
I would also like to know if there are other adapter and software packages that compare or are better.
At this point I am simply researching this idea and so far I am not particularly biased toward any specific product. All knowledgable responses would be greatly appreciated.

HERE is the link to the AE scan tool on ITP's site
Thanks Steve,
That's quite a list. Is the Ford Diesel software part of the bundle in that $350 price tag and have you used this set up? I do like the features. I appreciate the reply.

Thanks Man,
I'll have to go look at that. Yeah, the ELM-5 has a nice price but if it won't do what the one you are looking at It isn't worth it to me.
Dave: I have the AutoEngineuity scanner with the Extended Ford Module software. You can look at and data log from a long list of parameters. Live display of nine at a time with your choice of which you want to see.
I don't know about switching back and forth with a GPS running at the same time.

It depends on what live display mode you use. You can get more then nine using the bar/grid display. You have to be careful which ones you use though, if you use ones that send tons of info at a time then that will slow the others down. You can scale the time intervals between readings to help slow mitigate that.
Between the autoenginuity(highly recommend this with Ford enhancement, I actually have it with 3 enhancements to handle all the vehicles that my family owns) and the PT DIAG my little mini laptop is a powerful tool in my "toolbox". If there are any specifics that you want to know about feel free to ask on here and/or in PM if you would rather.
Tex: You are correct but those wouldn't be very useful or safe to view while driving down the road.
Obsolutely, that's why I have those gauges setup to datalog and/or sound alarms when they hit certain readings(I love that software). I actually don't pay much attention to it unless there is a sound that goes off.

I agree and it is why I would like to have real time data as well as recording capability. I would also recommend a second person to man the computer. When we are on the road my wife or another driver usually goes along and opertaes the computer.
