Oil overfull

So after reading some threads here talking about fuel in the oil, i checked my oil...uh oh.

I am at 6500 miles, so 1500 past first oil change. Oil reads overfull on the dipstick, and still over the full mark using the short stick method.

(short stick method: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...ethod-fyi.html))

Oil doesn't specifically smell like diesel, but does smell weird. (I am more used to gas engines so maybe its normal smelling)

Also, when wiped on a rag it is more gray than brown. (Again, may be normal, just used to more of a brown color).

Do I have a major problem or just something to mention at the next oil change?

so did you get a oil change at 5K? If you did it at the dealer I bet it is over full from them. You are suppose to let it sit for about 20 mins before draining. A quick lube or jiffy lube isn't going to do that so that may be the issue.

Oil color sounds about like mine with about 1500 miles on it.

Oil was changed at the dealer. I am 99% sure I checked not to long after the oil change and it was in the normal range, but I could be wrong.

How can I tell if there is fuel in the oil. Will it smell a lot like diesel fuel? Will it feel / look different?

Its in the shop right now, we shall see what they say. At the minimum, they owe me a free oil change for overfilling significantly. Its significantly overfull even if checked immediately after shutting the engine off (which normally would make it look lower than actual level).

One way to tell if you can't smell it. Get a white paper tower and put a dab of oil from the dip stick on it. If there is a ring around the oil spot. Then there is fuel in it.

So the shop is saying that it is not overfull. I went to the shop to see, and they checked with me standing there and it is not overfull. When I checked before taking it in, there was oil up on the metal of the dipstick well above the full line. I don't get it....
I am going to keep a close eye on it.
