400, 460, 429, clutch, swap
friend has a blown 460 and needs transportation...searching didn't yield a solid answer.
he has a T-18 tranny. I have a 351m ready to go. I figure the 460 flywheel and parts will bolt right up and work fine. If not what do we need.
Also, different answers found for perches and mounts. Do we need the type 1 perches (ie "small block" perches) or will the 460 perches work with the 400 motor mounts?
I listed this so it will be found with a reasonable search....
thanks

i believe the balancing is different you'll need a 351m/400 flywheel. If his 460 is the older 70's style then it probably has a 390 flywheel on it.(right balancing but 3 less teeth) Only an auto was available behind the 429/460 back then with the exception of the boss429. New style 460 I thought only had ZF5 behind it.(integral bell housing) What year of truck and is it 2wh or 4wh?

looks like the internal balance flys are the same for FE and 460's with 176 teeth, but there are also external 176 tooth flys for 460's, centerforce part number is CTF-700330, 24oz imbalance
Flywheels - summitracing.com
fly for 351M/400 is also 176 tooth but 28oz imbalance, part number 700290

catalog in the 'library' shows FE using a 184 tooth fly PN 700260 and 460 using a 176 tooth pn 700280, ??????????

I regularly swap back and forth between a 460 and a 400 in my 81 and no the 460 perches will not work nor will the flywheel for multiple reasons and the most obvious is that you can't even bolt the 460 flywheel on the 400 you will see what I mean. The other problem you may run into is whether the 460 had a long style clutch or a diaphram this isn't a big deal as any competent machine shop can drill a flywheel to accept either as this is what I did with both my flywheels since I never know what clutch I'll be using. Hope this helps.
