I am rebuilding a 400 from a '79 pickup. In choosing a timing gearset, I would like to get rid of the factory retarded cam timing for something a bit more performance oriented.
If I get a multi keyway gear, will 0 deg be straight up or emissions friendly retarded like original? Or will I want to go with the advance keyway? Is there an earlier timing chain set that would work?
I'm hoping that someone will know the answer so that I don't have to go through the trouble of degreeing the cam.
I got through Portland DEQ with a straight up Cloyes set and a RV cam, 4bbl, headers and cats in my 79 4x4 with a 351m. I was richer at idle than at 2000 rpms, and I think I have some engine issues. If your going to rebuild get the higher compression pistons from TMI, run a small cam like the comp 255deh straight up and use a newer converter and you'd be ok for the smog test. I think Southern Oregon isn't as stringent as the Portand Metro area. DO you need to smog your 77 down there?
If you buy an aftermarket like a Cloyes it will have a straight up and sometimes a 4 deg advance and retard. More expensive ones have greater indexing degrees.
is it a difference you could feel in the seat of ur pants?
I put one in a '72 Galaxie 400 thats now my grandsons and my 81 351M it sure seemed to make a difference.
I was always told the '72 & later timing chains (and this goes fro the 429/460s) had the cam retarded either 4 or 8 degrees.
Can anyone confirm what I was told ?

I read about this several years ago, but I don't know if it was true. I know when I was researching timing sets, I found that the early and late aftermarket stock replacement #'s were the same. I haven't had a chance to compare the original gears to the new ones.
i am really interested in doing this to my 400. I just bought a F-350 Wrecker truck. I don't want to do anything really wild just perk it up a little. The truck is really comming along. I found several vacum leaks a melted distributor cap and haven't fixed the carb yet but the accelerator linkage isn't engagint the accellerator pump right off the idle.Could someone please post part numbers and brands for the gears and chain that will eliminate the retarded cam timing. Would also be interested in any pics that have the front covers removed . I have mucho experience in chevy engines but none in Ford.. thanks for any input.
I compared the factory timing set to the Summit replacement set. There is no difference between them. These pictures have the marks lined up as they are installed.
