I still trying to figure out my vibration issue when running the engine in nuetral at 2300rpms and up. Had DZLJIM run AE and all injectors passed CCT and Buzz test. Jim found no abnormal readings on AE when I had the engine vibrating at 2500rpms. I had an old timer tell me the harmonic balancer could be gone. I also found a TSB (97-01-13) which is close other than saying its only for 96-97 diesel, manual, 4x4 trucks. The TSB says to "Add a known mass value in the best location on the clutch to reduce the vibration and/or "moan.""
I guess I could do the TSB and see it it helps/hurts the vibration issue.
Any input on using a rubber OE style balancer or a fluid balancer other than cost.
Could be the harmonic balancer but it's something you normally don't feel unless it's blown apart...the engine does though. The outer ring usually slips on the inner ring when the rubber gets old and checked.
Does this have a dual mass flywheel?
I think I found it. I found a TSB #97-01-13 which was very close to the problem I was having. It says to balance the flywheel clutch assembly by using a longer bolt on the pressure plate and adding washers to it. The best I could do was to move the vibration up 500rpms, so it starts at 2700 instead of 2200 rpms. I have a valair clutch I installed alittle over a year ago. The weight I added is on the "leg" of the pressure plate that already has a balance weight installed from valair.
Just a question, is the imbalance weight on the flywheel supposed to line up with the imbalance weight on the balancer or be 180* out? Mine is 180* out of line.
That's a good question. Not sure if the PSD is external or internal balanced??
Adding weights might be doing more harm than good IMO. If it's so far out of balance that it can be felt there must be something noticeable like a weight that's been thrown off or a chunk of the harmonic balancer missing.
On the flywheel, theres only one way the bolt holes line up, correct?
The flywheel imbalance weight is cast into the back side so you cant throw a weight. The pressure plate is balanced with a weight that looks like the "battleship" game piece but bigger. The weight is inserted in a hole and the peg is mushroomed to hold it in the hole.
The PSD is external balance.
