I had my flywheel replaced two years ago. It is a dual mast? flywheel . It started making a rattling noise about one year and a month into replacement. Now at two years in it is coming apart.Does'nt seem like something that should need replaced that often. Can it be replaced with a regular flywheel not dual mast?I think I read where that is a better choice. The dealership would not warranty because it was one month to late. advice welcomed
We need to know what you are working on. But yes, you can replace the dual mass flywheel with a single mass, or single plate flywheel. You will notice a little more noise and vibration, because the dual mass is designed to dampen those vibrations. But it's a worth while upgrade for sure.
And if you need a good price on a flywheel and clutch, let me know. I've got a very good source.
Tell ya what, check out Valair Heavy Duty & Performance Clutches and find a clutch you like. Call and talk to Dan or Kevin. They are both very good friends of mine. Dan owns the company, and Kevin is his manager. So either will be able to help you. Tell them Cody from Death Row Diesel sent you and they will hook you up with a great price on a whole new set up. And if you don't know what you need, call and talk to them first. They will talk to you about what you do with the truck and exactly what clutch you will need. And I'm willing to bet, they will set you up with a whole new clutch set up and single mass flywhee for way less than a dual mass (not mast, this isn't yaght racing) Just tell them Cody sent you and they will take care of you, I promise.
Was it warranty on the original clutch that was denied or was it warranty on a replacement? From your original post it seems you were denied warranty on a replacement clutch done two years ago. If that is the case, what does the shop that did the replacement two years ago say about what flywheel was put in the truck at that time?
Single mass flywheel is the way to go in my opinion. I replaced mine when I bought the truck in 2000 with a factory dual mass setup and had to do it again at 100,000 miles due to the flywheel failing again. The clutch had 75% wear surface left so it did not need replaced. I bought a LUK single mass conversion for $570 delivered that included the clutch, pressure plate, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, flywheel and alignment tool. The factory dual mass flywheel alone was $1,100 if I was to go that route again so I did not. Great thing to do to the truck. Pedal effort reduced, one inch larger diameter clutch - as RubberDuck said there is more gear noise especially at lower RPMs but I do not even notice it any more.
