Strange High Idle

It's my 2nd day with my new (used) 08 Lariat CC DRW, I park at work, and the engine goes into a high idle around 1200 rpm. Push on brake and it goes down, let off brake goes up.

My old 2008 6.4, built only 2 weeks after this one, never did this. It would high idle only when sitting for a long time.

My DRW was just reflashed 2 days ago, but my old truck had been reflashed also.

Is something wrong?

might be an option that was placed on your new truck. Do you have the window sticker to see what options it came with?

If your truck is regen-ing it'll do that too. I know that with the latest flash it's not supposed to do that, but maybe you don't have the flash that you think you have.

Sounds like the previous owner installed the SEIC (Stationary Elevated Idle Control) - this is usually controlled by a switch. Make sure all of your Upfitter switches are in the off position. If they are, look for another switch, perhaps under dash above the emergency brake pedal. This is where you tap into the SEIC wiring.

Good luck - but it definitely sounds like the SEIC. I flip mine on when I will be idling for over 4-5 minutes, because I've heard you shouldn't idle these trucks for long without raising the IDLE RPMs.

Sounds like regen mode to me. Call the dealer with your VIN number and see if it has had the latest reflash to prevent regen's when in park.

Idle

I don't have the window sticker, but I know it was built on 12-20-2007. The F250 I traded in was built 1-7-08.

This truck doesn't have upfitter switches, I'm going out to the parking lot now to look for a switch or other stuff by the emergency brake.

Is the emergency brake engaged?

Wires

I looked near the e-brake--

It was not engaged.

Next to the computer access port, there are 10-11 small gauge wires that have been cut off and are just hanging. I don't see any switches.

Just to the right of the access port, there is one of those dealer added kill switches that they try to sell you. I didn't buy the plug in, it is gone, so maybe the cut wires are related to that, but the wires from the engine kill are large gauge.

This is really annoying that someone just cuts something off and leaves the wires hanging.

Could this be related to the high idle?

If the emergency parking brake is not engaged, the PTO/SEIC would not initiate - so that rules out that solution.

Has the truck demonstrated this behavior since you took posession? It could be a REGEN (can you hear the exhaust ticking from the heat?), but it shouldn't last that long (2 days).

When you first crank up the truck in the morning (when it is not warmed up), does it exhibit this behavior immediately? I know for a regen to occur, certain temperature levels must be met by different sensors before the regen is initiated.

As the others have stated, if you have the new programming, the REGEN should not happen below 30MPH and definitely not at IDLE anymore.

ReFlash

I took it back to the dealer, they hooked me up with their senior diesel guy, and I know he is super sharp from experience.

The loose wires near e-brake are from Ford harness, he said Ford uses same harness that has trailer controller hook up even if truck comes with trailer contoller installed. So no issue there.

He brought out his laptop and reflashed the ecm and the cluster.
He says everything is current and then he ran diagnostics on each module and sensor looking for faults. Didn't find any.

It stopped high idling when parked, so now I will drive it a while and see how it goes.

Cold idle strategy? Where are you, what outside temp was it?

Jaybred, it's always nice to get to talk to the Diesel tech. I don't know why most dealers insist on insulating their mechanics from the public. I always feel better talking with the guy who actually does the work, even if it's an oil change.
