Read the manual for you controller before you go replacing anything.
It sounds like there is a short on the power side of the brakes, or at least the amperage is more than the controller expects to see.
Again, you can have a good ground on the truck when checking from the truck plug to the truck ground AND have a good ground from the trailer plug to a trailer ground ...BUT: do you have a good connection from the truck ground to the trailer ground? It should be checked by using a meter to go from the truck frame to the trailer frame WITH the power cord being connected, BUT with the trailer NOT touching the truck!
If anything in the ground side of the system was a problem, the lights on the trailer would flicker when the brakes were applied, since the power for them goes through the same ground. With the lights stable, it can't be a main ground problem. It has to be between the battery and where the brakes tie into the ground, but it really sounds like a short.
I think the greased ball timing is just coincidence, especially if you didn't pull it for a while before you greased the ball.
