Manual Locks to Power?

I have a 2000 f350 xl. It was manual locks and windows. I was wondering if it would be possible to change them to power locks? and or power windows. how difficult would this be? Is there any kits I could purchase? thanks

I am halfway through the same process in a 2001 regular cab. I bought a 4-door power lock kit off ebay that said it was for the F250, but was really a universal kit. I had to lengthen the wires to reach the right hand door, so I canniblized one of the shorter leads to lengthen another.

This kit has a "master" actuator which I put in the driver's door. If I unlock the driver's door with a key or pull up on the lock tab it also unlocks the passenger door. It will lock both doors if I push down on the driver's door lock tab. I am in the process of installing power windows using all factory parts, except for the wiring harness, and will hook up the factory door lock switches when I get that far. The aftermarket locks use the switches differently, but it is just a matter of where to hook up the wires.

As to the power windows, I had to go to the junkyard and buy 1) door panels with switches, 2) internal wiring - be sure to have them cut the wires as far into the cab as possible so you have the option of splicing your wires inside the door or inside the cab, and 3) the rectangular plug under the steering wheel panel (right side) that carries the power for the doors and locks from the main harness. I bought the window regulators with motors brand new off ebay. I also bought some non-sticky vinyl tape like the factory uses to make the harnesses, off ebay. It is much easier to use than regular black electrical tape!

I made a harness that plugs into the factory rectangular plug and runs out into the doors. I haven't had a chance to splice in the door harness and install the other components yet. I ran my new harness along the bottom support channel of the dash, just below the glove box.

The factory system uses the GEM time delay and other features like "one-touch-down" that I am not going to duplicate, because it would make the project too difficult and expensive. It will be plain-jane just up and down only when the key is on.

If you want more information, let me know. I had to study the wiring diagrams for a while before I figured out how to convert to the simple system. A few wires get hooked up differently, but mostly it is just leaving wires unused.

I would just go find some power doors off of a wrecked truck...

The doors are only part of the project. If the his truck came without power windows and locks, the main wiring harness doesn't have the wires for them. It also won't have the wiring and GEM programming for the bells and whistles that go with the factory installation. That is why my post was so long.

Well Nolan, have you converted a bare-bones XL to power windows and locks?

Easy there..... i was saying that's its lame that the wiring harness isn't correct to add that stuff. Nothing against you.

Sorry, I feel the same about Ford leaving things out. I've spent a lot of time figuring out how to work around that, and will be posting my experience when I get it done. In the meantime, I was trying to let CSaley know what he should do to prepare for the project.

What Ford should have done, put in a universal wiring that would control a full loaded vehicle and if it didn't have power anything, just tape off the plugs. But I guess that would make to much since for them to do that.
