ss selinoid

oh boy!

don't you just love em,you can turn a wrench on them yourself ,parts, can be had, they break you fix-em,
i got three, hell one of the three starts
trying to get the 87 6.9 excab dully to start just repaced all the injectors ,the return line caps and hoses , the ss selinode can't hear any clicking, took it out bench test ,works great, put it back in,at first truck wouldn't start, then the bulldozer fired up ,it was like a run awy train!!
after i ran away!! i got something to cover the air intake,
here is the question
i must have put the ss selinode back in wrong!
how would it start at all?
when i take it out again to fix it how do you put it in the right way ?
is there any little trick ,getting that hook lookin pice on ?
cause i think the other truck that don't start has the same issue.

In the case of the 6.9 injector pump, the top cover needs to be installed a certain way for the fuel shut off solenoid to work.

Drop the cover onto the injector pump slightly forward of its final position (about 1/4"). Then carefully slide it back while holding it down until the bolt holes line up. Drop in and finger tighten the rear bolts first, because thats the part of the cover that will try to lift. Don't let the cover lift and any time or you will have to start over to make sure its on right.

Don't force anything, be patient and gentile with the parts. IF something snags, don't force it.

You can try the help section, but if they don't have it there, kalecoauto might also have what you need.

Also after you get the fuel shut off solenoid installed, before you start the engine turn the key on and pull the electrical connection at the IP.

If you don't hear the solenoid clicking, don't start the engine.

Something is not where it should be if it don't click.

I don't think that "hook" is supposed to attach into anything in the pump. Its only supposed to push against the part in the pump in one direction. That might be your problem.

The hook does not hook anything, but it must drop down in the correct position on the metering linkage, the govenor will be jambed in the wide open position.

My directions state 1/4" inch to the front of the final loaction and 1/8" above the IP housing.
Carefully slide the govenor cover down and to the back as you reinstall it.
Spring tension should be felt and the FSS should click when power is applied and removed from the FSS terminal on the IP before the engine is started.

Engine damage and bodily injury may result from failure to follow these directions.

Be careful cranking and killing it like that. I have only seen it happen one time but a friend of mine cranked his one cold winter day and moved it across the street and killed it before warming it up and the backlash when he killed it unscrewed the fan (his was just idling) and still took out the radiator.

Actually I have run mine off twice.
Once was pulling into a lumber yard right after I got it, so after a new fan and radiator the fan clutch was installed with Lock Tite.

When I was changing my first reman engine, my mechanic friends that were helping me told me I was crazy using Lock Tite when we had to heat the fan clutch to get it off because of the Lock Tite.

So when we put it back together, he said let me put the fan cluch on, without Lock Tite.

Fine, fired the engine and let it run foir a couple munutes, turned the engine off and the fan fell on the ground.
My friends are two brothers, they just stood there looking at each other for a few seconds before one said I think he was right, pass the Red Lock Tite please.

Fortunately the radiator was not harmed, and I really had a good laugh.

the metering linkage moves, back and forth, witch is the position it should be in when installing the selinod, when i took it off it felt like it was hooked on to that linkage, cause you had to wiggle it off,it didn't just come straight up &off.
when it was factory installed, does the selinod pull the linkage or does it get out of the way, allowing the linkage to move?
so far this is fustrating, but in trying to do this myselfis rewarding,
i can only imagine what the ford dealer whould charge

Lets see if we can't fugure this out.....

Its my belief that this image shows the INCORRECT way of installing the solenoid lever. You can see its hooked behind the metering lever instead of pushing against it.

Unless I'm mistaken, I've always installed mine with the lever in the "pull away" position as you describe it. Not in the hooked position.

What do you figure, Dave? Make sense?

The lever from the FSS should be left of where it is in the picture.
The lever should slide down that slope just right of the washer and rest against the horizontal tab.

The metering rod should be spring loaded and want to return to the left in the picture.

When the fuel shut off has power supplied to it it slides the linkage to the right turning the fuel on.

I'm trying to find some other photos that show the internals of the pump. In this drawing you can see the lever on the soleniod at the top. Not how it doesn't hook onto anything, it only pushes against the other part in front of it.
