The testers at auto parts stores just spin them fast and check for voltage, it will say yours is good, but won't say how good.
+1, I have been through that song and dance too, battery would drain flat overnight but the auto parts store said the Alt checked out fine. After changing everything else in the charge circuit I bought another Alt and whadayaknow.. problem fixed. The internal regulator or rectifier was shorted, don't know which because the alternators are a bitch to get apart so I didn't bother.
Well I had it tested while on the truck. I had the AC and fan on high, Head lights on and the windshield wipers on. It showed 14.7 Volts and 45 Amps. I guess that is not the problem, I gues I am going after the vacuum leak theory.

Or tune up, or leaky injectors.
What's the condition of your tune up parts, plugs, wires, cap. What kind of plugs?
How many miles and have the injectors ever been serviced? They do wear out, they will leak fuel cinstantly and have a poor spray pattern, these proplems will show up as a poor idle.
The truck idles perfect, runs smooth, it just has a lag when I first take off. Other than that, Its great. The clattering I had in the past has apparently gone away, I was runnig Super Unleaded in it, I put in Plus grade fuel and it still is not clattering, I did run another bottle of LUCAS through it, so it may have cleared the clattering problem.
i have since replaced my rotor, cap ignition coil and fuel filter and still the problem persists. however now my truck seems to have a little more pep to it and now my voltage gauge seems to hold steady in 13.5 to 14 volt range. strange.
