I just put the flowmaster muffler on my truck and here is my list of problems... I have a 2 1/8 ID size pipe on the truck and the inlet of the muffler was a 2 1/2 inlet... don't you know they don't make a reducer for these particular sizes... nor do they apparently make a combination of fittings that you could put together to work. So here is what I did... I bought one fitting that was too big for the OD size on the pipe on the truck, then i put cross cuts in it on the big end, then i clamped the bejeezus out of it... its on there but it doesn't have a good air seal on it. also, the hanger I bought wasn't long enough to reach any place I could mount it to so I'll admit to using a length of bailing wire to connect the end of the hanger to a mounting point ( can't see if your not under the truck). Should I have done something else besides going to the muffler shop? Also, the flowmaster sound isn't what I expected, I've read posts that said they had trouble with the sound because of the cats so i'll probably gut them soon... any advice on unhacking the exhaust would be good though, thanks
some jb weld smeared all over everything usually fixes exhaust leaks pretty well, don't use the 5min jb weld use the real stuff the 5min melts just be sure to give it the time it needs to dry and bailer twine melts as well at least use a coat hanger man lol

Thats probably why he went with bailer wire....
and he used it to hang the hanger not the pipe.....
Also, I find coat hangers wear out quick....I used aircraft cable
i don't feel as bad now, its just a single pipe, and i was hoping for something more agresive sounding than stock is all, but those cats are keeping it quiet
I know exactly how you feel, with the sound anways. I just put a new glasspack on my truck. You can barely hear it with the stock cats. I knew that would happen but I needed a new muffler anyways. I still have all the stock exhaust pipe (stainless steel, im gonna keep it as longs as possible, its still like new). I ordered a glass pack that was almost identical in dimensions to the stock muffler, cut the old muffler out with a saw zaw and was done 10 mins later. I think my exhaust was 2 1/4 OD and the muffler was 2 1/4 ID or something like that, it fit right over. I guess this post probably isnt going to help you very much so i'll stop
I started my truck witout the muffler and it still wasnt even close to being loud. Take the damn thing off, no one will notice. But you already paid for it so IDK.
The exhaust is 2 1/4" OD(pipe doesn't go by ID), the muffler you got was too big. You should be able to get a 2 1/2" OD to 2 1/4" ID reducer and make it fit nicely.
I stuck a cherry bomb on mine(2 1/4" ID ends-fit nice) and it's just barely noticable. It does have a "rumble" on the highway, but nothing like the old school machine gun kelly sound! The cats really quiet these trucks down. Once the weather breaks for good, I'm going to do some "modifying" and see what happens.
the pipe goes by od and id sizes... they had tags on them with both and sometimes just one Id size on one side and an od size on the other... I'm a machinist so I am used to doing it by the ID...but when they started mixing and matching it was a little confusing. I don't like the cracking sound of the cherry bombs when you let off the gas... the flowmaster has a deep rumble sound but will be better with the cats gutted.
I have had the same problem with cats limiting volume. I got rid of my stock cat and put on a high-flow unit, biggest waste of money ever. Truck sounds exactly the same as it did with the stock unit, I have a full custom exhaust from my headers back and the thing is just not as aggressive sounding as I want. The Explorer in my sig is louder, but it has gutted cats and an 6 year old 18" Cherry Bomb, so it pretty much does not have a muffler. I am removing the high-flow cat this spring and that should get me the volume I want. Right now the tone is really good, the truck sounds real mean, there just is not enough volume.
Why gutt the cats ?? Just get ride of them.. Its better to have the exhaust the same size off the headers to the muffler..Then just run a flowmaster..
I agree, just put in a piece of pipe and keep the cat in case you need it someday. Having a gutted cat also creates an expansion chamber which is not good for exhaust flow.
