I say get rid of the muffler altogether. If you must have a muffler, get a Cherry Bomb Extreme or Flowmaster 10, whichever is cheaper. Have a leaker installed before the muffler.

Here in Va, you don't need a muffler if you have good a good cat. I took my muffler off and the truck rumbles real nice.

I changed out the cat with a high flow cat ran a 3" pipe into a new flow master and 3" pipe all the way out and it sounds great not too obnoxious but yet a descent sound. this was all before I blew the motor so now im back to square 1

A lot of people here are saying the same thing: Delete the muffler. Simply replace it with pipe.

i run open headers a lot actually lol i live on a farm in the country so there are NEVER cops around and i have exhaust cutouts so in a matter or like 2 mins i can have open headers on my truck

i have my timing bumped up to 14* now instead of the 8 that it was at when i took that video and it sounds a lot meaner with more timing
YouTube - Cammed out 5.0 mud truck open headers

and yeah i agree when my exhaust fell off (yes it was so rusty it fell off when i got the truck) i didn't even notice the engine was louder i just noticed it dragging on the ground lol

In normal conversation, most pipe goes by "OD". When they flare the end to fit over something, then they give you the ID so you know what it fits onto.

You needed a 2 1/4" Id(to fit over your stock pipe) to 2 1/2" OD(to slip into your muffler) to make that muffler fit your exhaust. Then another one to hook up tailpipe. They of course might not make that combination?

Neither of my trucks have cats or mufflers. The 5.0 sounds absoluetly beautiful, and not too loud, while the I6 is a bit too loud but still sounds good.

the thing is.... if i need to take it to a shop, any self respecting place around here won't touch it without a cat on it. that's the only reason I was going to gut them and make it look like they are still there... i'll look and see if there is a way to run a pipe inside them and just put the covers back on for looks

Where do you have your tailpipes exiting on your trucks? I want to straight pipe my truck but don't want to go back to have an uncomfortable truck to ride in.

my tail pipe now ends with the muffler about two feet past the cab on the left side as you look at the front... why would your truck be uncomfortable depending on where your pipe came out??? I was thinking in the future when i get another bed for it i'm going to run dually pipes out through the bed on both sides... but i'm a long way from that now

When I had my stacks ran to the side in front of the tire, it was loud enough to do permanent damage to your ears inside the cab. I was having constant ear and headaches. That's why I had the pipe ran to the rear behind my tires. I was just wondering how loud it would be if I ran a straight pipe after my axle, or right before it?

not sure about that... I personally like the deep rumble of the flowmaster so if i was to put stacks in the bed I would still put the flowmaster mufflers on the pipes... thats just me though.

You think Flow's provide more rumble than straight pipes?

I just like the sound better... more controlled... around here there are alot of people with the muffler hanging off or badly hacked pipes, or just pipes with holes in them... sounds horrible, so I like to sound like I made the truck sound like that on purpose and not because I'm lazy or don't care that my muffler fell off... I don't know, sounds kinda crazy now that i think about it
