there is one member here that has them on his truck, he put headers dual exaust a ram-air intake and turned the fuel up, i think he said he dynoed it and got something like 240 hp i think i dont know for some reason that number sticks in my head, maybe he will chime in if hes still active.
I talked to him about them; sounds like he did his research.
I might do them this summer. I like the idea of the "K.I.S.S." principle; keep it simple (no turbo to break down). That's why I would go with headers on a non-turbo set-up. On the other hand, if you do a lot of towing, and need extra torque and HP, then a turbo would be a logical choice on an earlier (non-turbo) truck.
I have a set on my truck and am happy with the performance, even when towing. Set up is as per my signature, mind you I haven't driven a turbo truck to compare it to, but I can say with full confidenace that with the ram air and bigger exhaust it out performs the stock truck I started with considerably.
Yeah, Stan's shop is just down the hill from my house. We spent a little time chewing the fat about the 6.9/7.3 IDIs. He's very knowledgeable, but he's also pretty "proud" of those headers. Last time I checked they were right about $500 plus shipping.
The headers with a good intake will probably get you about as much of a performance gain as your basic non-wastegated turbo - at sea level. But like Dave said, if your're doing much of your towing in the mountains, the turbo is going to do more for you. And you can get a good used turbo setup for not too much more than the headers.
There was a guy on TDS that dyno'ed Stans VS Stock. He gained something like 5-7 HP with headers.
$100/1 hp
I guess it's up to You to decide what price to pay for Your HP?
Stan has dyno figures for the headers vs non-headers. Fact is, not everyone needs (or wants) a turbo on their truck. With as low a volume as Stan has for these headers, they're actually pretty reasonable if that is the way you want to go.
I'd sooner spend $600 on a set of headers that give you SOMETHING positive (HP, mpg) for your truck instead of some of these guys that spend $1,000's on jacking their truck up and putting giant dounut tires on them to give away fuel-mileage, safety (and money!) for no measurable gain or purpose.
Headers don't need forced oil lubrication and an intercooler either, and they don't have bearings to burn up.
i have also seriously thought about headers, but i have a psd turbo thats about 1-2 days away. so i get to have some fun, a good reason to play with my welder and cutting torch
Okay, the reason i was thinking about headers was mainly to get rid of the stock logs because of thier exit location. The mill is going in a 79 F-350. Eventually i plan on twin turboing it. headers are easy to heat and bend to make go outside the frame rails where the turbos will be mounted... just an idea im kicking around.
lol... old nickname from highschool. i use it because its a name thats never taken. Not exactly G rated but not as dirty as it seems.... really funny story.
