Im really kicking the idea around of building my own. They wont be perfect, but i cant see how they can be that hard. Only thing im wondering is what to use for flange material. Would regular cold rolled steel work? My plan for the headers are more moving the exaust where i want it to go and giving the turbo something to bolt to more so than a tuned set of headers that provide max power. Ill just keep em equal lenght. If anyone that is using a pair could tell me how long thier primaries are and what size for an idea of where to start.

You can buy just the header flanges from Stan's. Prices aren't bad either. At least you won't have to make em!

I'd sooner spend $600 on a set of headers that give you SOMETHING positive (HP, mpg) for your truck instead of some of these guys that spend $1,000's on jacking their truck up and putting giant dounut tires on them to give away fuel-mileage, safety (and money!) for no measurable gain or purpose.

Headers don't need forced oil lubrication and an intercooler either, and they don't have bearings to burn up.
Headers vs turbo, the headers will never win. The way diesels are fuel injected, a diesel and a turbo go hand in hand. I bet if Ford had it to do over, they would have turboed these old engines from the start.

Don't forgot they also had to be more reliable than the 5.7, like that was a hard task.

Also, think about cost. Why is it most ppl dont do a turbo upgrade? Thats right $$$$. An extra $1k plus per truck to build. For being non turbo i think that IH did a pretty good job with the IDI's.

I did not even think about that! that is really awesome, ill have to look into it and see what thier price is. Has anyone ever heard of or had any problems with Stan's Flanges warping? Also, correct me if im wrong, but diesel exaust is hotter than a gasser, so i wonder if primary thickness will be a big issue? Id like to run a hair on the thick side anyway to keep the heat out of the engine compartment. Any thoughts?

Now you want to guess the EGT value of that engine?

How can they do that without melting down the turbo or the pistons? Hell even the head?

That,s why they spray oil on to the bottom side of the pistons. Metal becomes incandescent around 800 DEG F, melts around 2000 DEG F. The only reason your exhaust plumbing doesn't go away is the air cooling of the outer surface.
