2009 Screw towing question

Anyone have any experience with the new 4.6L, 6 speed tranny and 3.73 rears and towing trailers?

I'm looking at an 09 XLT Screw with the above mentioned setup. My trailer weighs in about 7,000lbs.

Any experiences would be appreciated.

That set up has a max tow rating of 9,300 lbs. If I were you I would opt for the 5.4L engine. The extra power would help with the towing and you wont lose any gas mileage. The 4.6L is a great engine for light towing but you will be much happier with the 5.4L.

Something else to consider: 7,000lbs is pretty heavy, depending on how often you tow you may want to look into the F250. It is a much more stable platform than the 150 so if you tow daily you will probably be happier with the 250. Just something to think about...

With the 9300lb rating like mstang66guy pointed out, you definitely would be legal towing 7000lb. I don't have any experience towing with the 4.6, but I have friends that have used them to tow. All have pretty much said the 5.4 is definitely more comfortable towing, but they were using the old 4.6 2V. The new 4.6 3V (like what you are looking at) is a totally different animal. It is rated for 320 lb-ft torque, which is nothing to be scoffed at. I think the 5.4 was rated for 335 when it first came out in 1997.

A Super Duty is definitely a more stable platform. You may want to consider that option if you plan on getting a larger trailer in the future. However, I think that would be overkill for 7000lbs. My family used to have a 6000 lb boat that I towed a lot in the summers with my '01 F-150 and later with my Super Duty. The F-150 handled it just fine, and it was just rated for 7200lbs towing. The Super Duty was more stable with that load, but by no means necessary.

Thanks for the replies...

I have a F350 PSD 4x2 for my heavy towing, I just need the 150 for pulling my travel trailer to the deer lease and my annual hunting trip up north. I forgot to mention the new F150 would be a 4x4. Would this make any difference in towing? I've never owned a 4x4 but need it when I go to Michigan in the wintertime.

The tow rating is still 9300 in that setup with a 4x4. I would think that would suit your needs just fine.

The 150 will handle that trailer just fine since it is not a daily trailer. The only advantage to the 4.6L engine over the 5.4L engine is the initial cost of the option to get the 5.4L. in a 4x4 truck (especially towing) you will not see any noticeable mpg improvement with the 4.6L vs. the 5.4L. With that said the new 3v 4.6L is supposed to be a great engine and I am sure will be able to move that trailer up the road comfortably.

Just to keep things in perspective, the 4.6L 3V has more HP/TQ than the old 5.8L had. Mated to the six speed w/ the 3.73 axles, you'll be handsomely rewarded as a daily driver.
