I read somewhere that you can test your fuel pressure at the schrade valve with an tire/air pressure gauge, is this really true? Just seems to easy and cheap.

Yes you can but it's not accurate...but use a cheap, throw-away gauge, the fuel will ruin the it and squirt fuel everywhere when checking.
Your looking for 40psi+ while cranking, ~60-80psi when running.
Even a high quality FP gauge will be difficult to see the exact pressure due to the pressure-pulses from the pump. The needle fluctuates 20-25 psi.....
