the gaskets have the right holes, they don't necessarily match the holes in the heads exactly.
white smoke(steam) usually indicates a bad head gasket, but sometimes it's a cracked head or even block bore. a perfectly clean spark plug will ID a cylinder that's getting coolant in it.
