How to clean out the block?

I have a 400 in my 77 and it overheats....I have eliminated all other possible scenarios except that there is crud in the block that is restricting or stopping the antifreeze flow and over heating it.....

Am i going to have to break the engine down or is there some sort of solution of that would dissolve the crud without hurting the engine.....

i really don't have the space to break it down right now....

Thanks for the help...

B

If you have tryed everything then I'd knock the freeze plugs out. Start with the rear ones, I've seen 400 blocks completely packed with crud back there.

the radiator has been flow tested, the shroud is in place, new fanclutch, correct thermostat, new waterpump drive belt, timing set correctly, carb mixture set correctly...

Knocking out the freeze plugs is a good idea and a PARTICULARLY GOOD idea if you have access to a pressure washer while they're out. I've had to clean out several engines over the years in this way, but it will usually show up by pulling the water pump and thermostat. The blockage will be right in that specific area.

Of course if it is clogged up at those points, it will be a mess all through.

Has this engine been running with tap water instead of distilled with the antifreeze?

If you decide to tear it down, grind the water passage casting flash out of the block and heads. It works wonders.

Yes, grinding away what flashing you can reach has a double benefit. It allows coolant to flow better AND it gives fewer spots for crud to accumulate.

Thanks for all the help and advise so far...

When I get the space I think I am gonna freshen it up a bit and put a new intake, carb, cam and some headers on it....

Speaking of....It does have duals on it but the guy that did it just took off half the exhaust manifold and bolted them up....could their be any issues with that to cause the overheat?
