Secondaries were flooding out after rebuild of carb. Gas tank was used but clean. Needle pulls out from the top of the fuel bowl. Remove the 9/16" nut and back the needle out with a screwdriver. Seemed fine, but, when I got the new one, could see that the plunger on the old one wasn't moving up and down fully, despite multiple carb cleaner spraying sessions. SO the needle must have some crud in it that I can't get out. Or defective from factory. I say crud in it..installed a new clear inline fuel filter also-solved problem, and, any crud now won't come back in at all.
Vet mechanic said that the spring in the Holley 4180 fuel filter assembly is a bad deal-somehow it allows crud past the filter. He says to toss it...
Lesson learned. Thought you guys may want to know.
That's one great thing about the Holley's, you can service and adjust the needle valves while it's on the vehicle. You didn't mention anything about adjusting it, but you need to. Take the site plug out of the side on the pass side rear, and adjust the needled height till the fuel is at the bottom of the site hole.
Most factory vehicles have the spring behind the fuel filter. I suppose they figured if the filter got clogged, the fuel pressure would push it back out of the way and still let fuel in. But of course it lets dirt in also. The factory literature on the aftermarket holleys always tell you to install a external fuel filter, the aftermarket carbs have a screen stuck in the inlet, but it's not suppose to be relied on as the main filter.
Yep, the new one shows a much greater range of motion on the plunger, definitely the one I put in last year in a rebuild, was plugged somehow, or defective...Truck fired immediately and sprays fine mist now. AHHHHH. Runs great. Inline clear filter is great-can check anytime to see if crud is coming into the line. Cheap fix, happy. Fun.
