well i think its almost time. my sending unit in my front take is officialy awol. wat is involved in replacing the parts so it will work and read fuel right. and i think when im into it might as well replace my rear tank. can anyone give me info on replacin the rear tank and where to buy a sending unit and how to replace it? thanks
Sending units can be pricey around $150 (sold as a complete unit with pickup tube). So before buying one check all of your electrical sytem from the tank to the tank selector switch (which changes from one tank sending unit to the other when switched) and up. Make sure you have good connections and grounds and no rubbed wires. Then ohm out the wires and make sure that the tank selector switch is working correctly. Then ohm out the sending unit in the tank (may have to drop the tank and remove it to check it in all posistions).
To remove the sending unit, have a jack (floor jack is best, espescially if fuel is in the tank), support the tank, loosen the clamp on the fill tube, undo the tank straps, lower the tank a little and reach over the top of the tank and diconnect the electrical connection, the fuel lines and the rollover valve vent tube (unclip the tube from the frame). Then lower the tank and work the fill tube off as you lower it. Once the tank is down, clean the area around the sending unit locking ring, take a flat drift pin (or flat head screw driver) and a hammer and tap the locking ring CCW (counter clock wise), remove the ring and then lift the sending unit out (as the float reaches the hole you may have to turn the sending unit sideways). Remove the rubber gasket ring. Installation is in reverse order.

ok thanks plow. my switch definately works. last night i accidently hit it while the truck was runnin. was in a rush went to slap the light switch and hit fuel. seen the guage start movin and switched back real quick. the rear hasnt had fuel in it for over a year since it started leaking. where can i get a sending unit. i dont want to go to the stealership
You can usually get a sending unit at most parts stores vato-zone etc. but alot of them will need to order it as its not usually a stock item, NAPA might have it in stock. You might want to look into LMC truck for a cheap rear tank, depending on where you are and your local laws you might even be a ble to get a rear tank at a scrap complete with a sending unit, for fairly cheap.
if i recal the front tank is a peice of cake, you do not have to remove it to replace the unit, it will sneak out of the opening with the tank in place. the rear tank is a remove only
