over cooling???

I drove to work this morning, when i got off the freeway my temp gage went down to the low limit for normal and stayed there... when i drove home it never got over the low limit... I went out to the store and it got up to about 1/4 the way up the gage... coolant is full, heat works, no coolant leaking, no smell... no idea what the hell is going on. Maybe could be sending unit? or maybe thermostat? anyone else have this problem before... could really use some thoughts on this

The easiest way to check this out is to use an infrared no contact thermometer or drop a regular thermometer in the radiator to see what the actual temp is on the engine. If the temp is normal, I'd suspect gauge or coolant temp sensor for the gauge.

It sure sounds like a sending unit. Maybe the thermostat is stuck open, but then your heater core shouldn't be putting out a lot of heat.

thats what i thought about the thermostat... the sending unit i'm not sure about though. I bought a new sensor for it today, not put in yet. does the sensor go inside the sending unit? the unit has two hoses on it, one to the water pump and the other to the heater core, the sensor they gave me just has a wiring harness on it... not sure what to do with it

On my 4.9 the sensor plugs into the thermostat housing...not sure what engine you have.
I also have seen gauges go bad...so I wouldn't rule that out....
of course i have also seen thermostats stick open.
Since you already have the sensor, install it and see what happens.

I don't know how your rig is set up, but, from my experience, there is usually a temperature sensor which interacts with the computer system engine controls, and a seperate sending unit/switch that interacts with the guage. I think that this would likely be mounted in the block somewhere, but there are a lot of different configurations out there.

I asked the guy at the parts store for a sending unit... he looked it up and showed me the drawing of the motor on the computer and the part he gave me is supposed to go right where the sending unit is on my truck... i'm not sure...just don't want to have the thing appart... then find out I need more stuff and can't drive my truck to the store

I just looked up the sending unit (temperature switch) and Autozones part number for it is TU25 (duralast). Is this what they sold you?

Yup, sounds like he sold you the wrong thing. I believe that this should be mounted right in front of the distributor. I'm going to go out and look at my '97 F250HD which should be the same as it is pretty much the same configuration.

EDIT: I looked, and mine appears to be mounted next to the distributor, on the intake manifold a few inches behind where the top radiator hose connects to the thermostat housing.

EDIT2: I found it in the Engine Management section.
