Ranger S base model 4cyl 2.0liter w/ carb. was avail until 88, everything else went EFI in 86.....Someone correct me if I am wrong, 8.8 did not appear until 93?
How subtle are you looking for in dash changes? The engines are easy. The 2.0l was carbureted thru '88 as stated above. The 2.3l was carbureted until around June of '85, there were a few '85 EFI equipped trucks, I know, I have one. The 2.8l was the v-6 thru '85, and it was always carbureted. The 2.9l replaced it in '86 (duh) and was always EFI. There are 2 slight variants of the Gen 1 dash. The earlier trucks had a row of lights above the steering column, each light was seperated from the others. This Dash was used thru '86. In '87 and '88 there were 2 rows of lights above the column, and they were all inside 1 black panel. The ***** for the heater controls also changed in '87, but you probably wouldn't notice unless you specifically looked. The first major dash change occurred in '89 when the body changed.
In 1990 Ford made the 4.0 V6 available in the Ranger and it came with the 8.8 axle, with either automatic or manual gear box. But the 2.3 4cyl, 2.9 and 3.0 kept the 7.5 axle. There may be some variation on this, but this is what you will usually find.
