F150 Lariet 5.4 2004 ex cab 82,000 miles CEL came on read the codes P0171 and p0174 Ford store says I need 4 cat converters for 1200.00 hard to believe all 4 went bad at same time any advice did clean Mass Air Flo sensor
Truck idles rough and will shut off after several minutes at idle

 

i check for a vacuum leak first,i dont think all 4 cats went bad,sounds funny to me

 

We put a new MAF Sensor in worked for about 1 hr and cel came back on Store took it back so no charge there. Mech is going to smoke the truck today what ever that is Will see what happens next

System too lean banks 1 and 2. Air/fuel mixture problem.

 

Check your fuel pressure if there is no vacuum leaks. You have to do this with a good scanner. It has a fuel rail pressure sensor that tells the computer what the fuel pressure is.

 

What are they symptoms? Does your truck have any driveability issues? Will it rev up to 2500 RPM's and be able to sustain it for about 30 seconds, or does it bog down at higher RPM?

 

My truck drives fine, its a little slow on reving while driving, but when you first crank it for the day it will rev like crazy, then go to a calm idle in 10 seconds. i changed air and fuel filter myself, but i do need to take it to a good shop to really scan the entire truck and mayde smoke test the vaccum system.

 

Try cleaning your intake manifold...

 

The converters are up to $2,000.00/each!!! ...X 4 = $8,000.00 "WTF"!!!

I looked on the parts fisch and did not find a part # for the reat converters.
I called Ford Corp and they would not tell me why or if I could remove them.
I called C.A.R.B. and she could only repeat one sentance over and over again.
I called the DMV and in two hours before I gave up they did not answer.
I called the B.A.R. they could only tell me it is normal to have mid year changes, so it is possible the some 2004 will have 4 converters and some will have 2. You have to replace 4 if it came with 4.
I called Magnaflow, they have front and rear which I now have to return because as of 01/01/09 there is a new suck my ***** CA law which states the converters must match a family number. WTF is a family number? Noboday knows! Not Ford Corp, Not CARB ...the stupid girl just repeated a family number is a family number. What does that mean lady? It means it's a family number. WTF does a family number mean? A family number is a family number. Ask Ford. I did stupid freekin idiot beeach, that's why I calling you they don't know what it means. A family number is a family number. OMG somone go postal on her, damn!

I was able to match the group number to a family number. So whatever a group number is, is the family number. You hear that you stupid CARB Beeeitch?

So this is just jack ars...enine insane! There is nothing on the hoods emission sticker that states 4 converters. Ford corp can not give me part #'s for the rear converters. For dealer can not give me part #'s for the rear converters. If nothing on the emmisions label says 4 converters then wtf should we not remove the rear 2. I don't care if it came with them. $2,000.00 each frack CA! Never in my life will I ever buy another CA vehicle!
