Dave, I have not read anything about modifying the springs, BUt sounds like you have. You will probably have to get new centerbolts and definatly new u bolts. If I had read about modifying the rear springs and knowing what I know now, I might have gone that way myself. I dont think you can go wrong.
Got the B's done on the back today. I ended up going the "modified B" route. This is what I was told to do by "caryt" over at another site: "Take the two shortest leaves from the Excursion spring packs and add them to the B code spring packs between the shortest leaf and the bottom overload leaf of the B code spring. Remove the sheet metal spacers of the B codes and replace them with the 1/8" spacers from the Ex springs."
Taking the springs apart was not a big deal at all. Just need a couple c-clamps and a grinder to knock off the original rusted centerbolt. Got it all back together with new Bilstein shocks. I couldn't install my Helwig because one of the 3-hole brackets was missing.
I took it for a ride a little while ago and man what a difference. Funny it can ride so much better with stiffer springs. Its a lot more stable and there's no skittish feel anymore over the bumps. There's still a little roll but i'm sure the sway bar will fix that.
I ended up at 40" DF, 40 1/4 PF, 41 1/2 DR, 41 3/4 PR. So 1 1/2" higher in the back using the stock rear block. I gained pretty much 2" front and back. To me it came out perfect. My trailer is still in storage so I'll have to wait until next month to test that out.
Thanks to everyone's input and replies. I am happy!
