I have a 64 ford 4x4 with a 292. and I want to change it out and was wondering what some of my options are and what motors besides the 292,352 will bolt up to my existing tranny. or replace the tranny and motor together.
The NP435 has a removable bell housing so if you were to go with a later model smallblock or a 335 series you can get a bellhousing that will fit, not sure about the input shaft though.
thanks, Im fairly new to the ford world and this is my first try at restoring an old truck so I have alot of questions, so if anyone can help feel free to educate the green horn. do you know in those older trucks if the 2wd and 4wd transmissions can iner change Because of the divorced transfer case? Im curious because I have been keeping track of a 2wd parts truck online thats a littile bit of a drive from where I live.
I am restoring an 84 F150 4x4 and have identified that it has an NP435 4spd top loader transmission bolted up to a 302 motor with a bell housing. I am considering replacing the 302 with a 460 that i got from a 72 Lincoln Continental. The 460 is currently bolted to a C6 automatic transmission.
I believe that the NP435 will marry up to the 460 but I am wondering if this is a good combination from a performance perspective. Will the 460 be too much for the NP435? Will i need to change out the gears in the rear end?
What other mods should I expect to perform for this combo? Is there a better transmission suited for this application?
I have a 77 F250 with a 460, NP 435 trans and 4:10 gears. It has a lot of off the line (it would probably climb the side of a house if I wanted) but highway speeds are a little bit of a problem. My tach shows 3000 rpm at 65 mph. Sometimes makes me wish I has a 5th gear. The NP 435 is a tough trans, will take a lot of torque. I don't think a stock 460 will hurt it. If you're looking for more top end I would look at a 5 speed or lower gearing than I have. Hope this helps.
I think that you have a married tranny and transfer case. but I looked at up grading to the 460 with a divorced tranny, and a guy at the mud bogs that had replcaed his 292 for a 460 told me that he had to replace the drive shaft between the tran and the tranny case, he used a front drive line for a jeep. but that was in the a 63 F100.
