Last summer i sanded down (first time doing bondo work, so it was kinda iffy) the rust and placed a plastic body filler over it. Now in a few places the rust has come back, and it's rotting away at the metal. So what do you all suggest i do? I wanna have the truck painted in the fall, and i agreed with my bud who is doing it that if i do all the body work, he will paint it.
i will be replacing the doors and tailgate, but under the drivers side tail light the metal has been rotted out so bad that i put a hole in it today.
so what do you all suggest i do about it? how can i fix it so it's all ready to paint? and welding is out of the questiopn because i can't do it
You need to start by removing the filler so that you can see ALL the rust. Then you should use a sand blaster or wire brush to clean off the rust that will come off. If after that you have large holes you can fill them with fiberglass but the rust needs to be treated first.
I'd get some phosporic acid from home depot under the name Jasco ($6/qt) then treat the rust several times. then scuff off the residue and clean it, then apply some fiberglass over the holes and then apply epoxy primer over the whole thing.
Welding in new parts is always an option, but not the only one. It really depends on how large the holes are and how well you treat the rust that's there. Fiberglass is waterproof as well as epoxy primer but regular filler and reglar primer is not.
