Original paint body swap

Original paint body swap
Hi Guys,
I've got a 72 f250 2wd with original paint. I'm going to try something unconventional and keep the paint on it since its in good condition. There's surface rust here and there and I'd deal with that separately.
In the swap over to the f250 4x4, I'd blast and undercoat the bottomsides from bare metal and other vulnerable places. I like the look of the original paint and I don't see any reason to blow a bunch of time and money on repainting the exterior from bare metal to new paint.
The two places I'd take some precautions on are the drip rails and bed seams, surgically cleaning them out and sealing then paint matching them from bare metal. I want it to look like an old truck, yet protect it using the bare metal /por15/undercoating to keep cancer rust from beginning.
Anyways, what more can a person do for the original paint, surface patina, and surface rust to stabilize its condition? Clearcoat? Any outside resources would be appreciated.
Thanks!
Sam

Unless you do something to the rust it will continue. If you use a clear coating, the rust will come through it eventialy. I don't know enough about the paint products that are on the market to say there isn't something out there you can use. One of the other members will know. Just hang on for a bit.

That's what I thought. Should I be cautious to leave surface rust untreated? It'll be stored in a garage and will be mostly a dry weather driver. I imagine surface rust might turn into cancerous rust? I don't mind leaving it if it will be stable and won't progress.
Thanks GaryKip for the tips.
