Hey,
this may be a stupid question but has anybody coated their entire truck with a spray on bedliner? If so or even any guesses what it would cost? or what kinda prep would be needed? Thank you in advance
I've got a 1974 F250 that when I bought it, the bed was a disaster. I think the kid before me had a plywood base in there that he took out right before I came over......
Anyway, I had Rhino Liners spray on my bed liner. I was also looking at Linex, but they're all essentially the same thing.
I had to have the bed sand blasted before the spray on people would do it. They (the spray on folks) could have ground it down for me for about $60 per hour which would have broken me. Sand-blasting is the way to go, and they can do it as the truk is. All they really needed to do was cover the rest of the truck in blankets (make sure they do this.) I did have a bunch of dust in the engine compartment and the cab, but I easily cleaned that out. A recommendation, put a cheap Fram air filter in before you go to get it sand blasted, drive it away from the sand-blasting folks, then throw away that stupid Fram and get a K&N.
What I had done was sand-blasting on Friday morning, pick-up Friday afternoon. Drive the truck over to Rhino Liners and store it in their heated garage overnight, and spray on the liner on Saturday morning. DO NOT let the truck sit outside overnight, IT WILL RUST!! That's bare metal and it doesn't take but a little dew to start the rust all over again.
Rhino liners put on the primer and sprayed on the liner. If you have the option, go "over the rail." This sprays the liner on the top of the bed edge as well as the rest of it. It's only about $70 more and WELL WORTH IT.
Now for the bad news:
Sand-Blasting: about $200
Spray on Liner: about $500 + $70 for over the rail
However, I've been incredibly pleased with my liner, and haven't had any problems with it. I've gotten all kinds of comments about how great it looks. Another thing, most spray-on liner companies offer a lifetime warranty with their work. The day it starts to peel up from hauling those 14 tons of gravel, and they'll replace the entire bed for free.
Go with the spray on liner, it's defintely worth it.
6 months to a year, or so, ago I saw a picture of a '78 or '79 Bronco in either "Four Wheeler" or "4-Wheel and Off-Road" magazine that had been completely painted with the liner. No mention of what it cost, though. It did look pretty wild. I haven't used it, but the going price of around $500 for a sprayed-in Rhino or other type of quality liner is making me want to try out Eastwood's kit. Supposedly, it's the same tintable professional-grade liner as the others (not the Wal-Mart or parts house spray can liners), and they're selling a kit that is reported to be adequate to shoot an 8' bed for $150. It may be worth trying on your bed, alone. If it turns out like you'd want, it should be considerably less to purchase the additional needed to shoot the rest of your truck than having the whole job done at a dealer.
hello
i have got a friend with an 86' ranger 4x4 standerd cab long bed and he assembled a truck so it had many diffrent colors and he desided to paint it with one of those colored bed liners he wanted red and he say the price tag and it happend to be a lot more then the black witch he mentioned he payed some were around 300.00 for the whole truck to be painted black bed liner it is very tough and very cool looking he goes off road quite a bit and what used to be scratches from big tree branches are now no vissable with the bed liner paint job it is very impressive and i am thinking about doing it to my 86' f150 4x4 when i get the money it would be a good investment if you frequently scratch your truck i think it is alot better then buying a new paint job everytime you scrath it
I was planning on spraying under the truck bed and the truck box now that I have the box off the truck. I am having second thoughts now thinking maybe I should just spray the underneath with under coating. And the inside box with one of the liner sprays what's your opinion Some of the positive coments was the sold sound.
A month ago, leaving the Aaron's 499 at Talladega, we were beside a Suburban that was completely coated with spray-on material. It was a 4x4 with about a 3" lift. The coating was drab green with black fender flares and the lowere part of the body was black. They sprayed the light bar and lights on top, the bumpers, door handles, grill, etc. That thing must have weighed 4 tons :-staun !!!!!
I thought about that option when I had my bed sprayed. (The spraying under the box now that it's off). It would have almost doubled the cost, remember that I had Rhino Liners do mine.
I don't think this is necessary. I do think that some kind of coating is required (probablly more than one coat to be sure), but not a spray on bed liner. It seems kind of overkill.
If you do go with the spray on for the bed, be sure to get it "over the rail" It's only a little more (by comparision) and worth it.
So has anyone ever seen a colored bed liner job. This is the route that I would like to go so as to not subtract from the originality of the truck. In other words, I want the protection of a spray-on liner but I don't want the "black bed" look. I was just wondering if the color was a good match to the original paint on the rest of the truck. I would have to guess that since I have never noticed a colored liner before that they are either an excellent match, or the price difference is too great to justify having it done in color.
If I remember correctly, there were only around 4 or 5 other colors available other than black. I really didn't look into the option, as my truck is black.
What I do recall is that the 4 or 5 options were pretty static. That is, they didn't color match your specific paint job. If the samples didn't match, then oh well.
Sorry for the bad new. Again, this was a few years ago. Maybe Rhino Liners or Linex can type match now, I don't know.:-X23
