hi, lately the front end of my '99 f-150 4wd has been shaking really bad when I get up to around 55mph. I replaced the tie-rod ends and got it alligned but it got worse. I recently looked at the lower ball joints by lifting the truck up then lifting the wheel up and there is alot movement and also the idler arm looks to be bad. could these be my problem. please help.
By all means replace lower ball joints when "there is alot movement". Also note that the front drive shaft is well known for making the front end shake badly. Could be as simple as a dry slip joint that can very easily be lubed, or a bad U-joint.
Hey, check out the horizontal shock in the front end as well as the parts that connect to it. Sorry I'm bad with the terminology I know that isn't what it's actually called. Dealer calls this the "death wobble". Usually that horizontal shock goes bad and can take out those "arms" that hold it in place by warping out the holes in it. Pretty easy fix all in all
Usually the alignment guy will haul you out to the shop and take a big bar and show you how much slop there is in the ball joints, tie rods etc.. It surprises me that they would even align it with bad ball joints. That's the purpose of them running a $49.95 alignment. Most of the time they will find something related to the front end that should be replaced.
When you do the lowers also due the uppers, they are the easy ones. They will come assembled on the control arm. Those are what the alignment guys loosens to adjust camber-caster. Then.... go get an alignment... Good luck with all!
Worn out shock absorbers and out of balance tires can also cause this kind of problem. I had a 1972 F250 camper special that did this same thing. New shocks fixed it. Dan.
Respectfully, does the torsion bar, 2 ball joint, double A-arm "99 f-150 4WD" front end have much in common w/your "1972 F250" coil spring, Dual I-Beam, King Pin front end?
