I have a 96 f-350. I have 33 inch tires and a 4 inch lift. WhenI bought the truck last year, I had no problems till recently and now when I hit about 40-50 mph, my wheels shake side to side very badly. Its been recently aligned, tie rods replaced as well as the steering stabilizer and the front end still shakes very badly. I am desprately looking for a solution before my truck shakes apart! Any advice would re appreciated.
i have the very same problem i have a 12 inch lift with 40" tires and the same problem at 40 mph i cant even control my truck and it shakes apart. every one told my it was the lift and tires, but i know it wasent because it just started and my truck was lifted for a year before that. i did replaced every thing and it would not stop. after weeks of replaceing parts i found the problems. first off if you have auto hubs for 4x4 throw them away they lock in and out causing a shake. second and and what fixed my was my front shackel bushing. not sure why it causes a shake but after i replace them it went away there only about $45 apiece. hope that helps.
theres literally hundreds of things that can cause death wobble.
just a few things to check (including the ones you said you already have checked replaced)
balljoints
ALL front end bushings
ALL steering (TRE's, steering box, pitman arm)
tires (air pressure, balance, out of round)
shocks (tight and in good condition)
leaf packs (make sure they are bolted down tight, i actually have seen this before)
front end alignment
ok now you need to look at ball joints, spring bushings, track bar bushings, loose springs. previously ithought you were talking like a tire vibration. but this is a whole different moster!! have you had it aligned lately? caster that is way off can cause it but it unlikely.
Of the three times I have personally experienced the death wobble, it was the track bar bushings 3 of 3. So naturally, that is where I would recommend you start.
Mine had the death wobble. Every steering/front end/suspension component checked out ok. I put new tires and shocks on. That only minimzed it, but it was still there sometimes on certain road conditions.
I added a steering stabilizer 2 years ago and that fixed it. Other than that, it's totally stock. So far, so good.
Matt: The steering stabilizer only mask the problem. There should be no wobble before the stabilizer. Wobble is usually caused by either a worn, bent or broken part.
The best way to find it is to block up the truck using the frame and let the suspension hang. Then, remove the drag bars and wheels and start checking each part with a small pry bar. Nothing should move out of its normal range or deflection.
Then block the truck on the suspension and do the check again. Sprung and unsprung weight will show a lot of things.
Thank you all for the advice. I finally was able to find the problem. I took a hard look and found that the tracking bar was about to fall off! One bolt was completely gone, and the other two were almost worked all of the way out. After tightening those back up, my problem was fixed! I can't believe it took me so long to find that, and it was overlooked so many times! Finally!
