Trans filter service

Hey everyone, i'm getting the parts together to do a quick fluid and filter change on my '02 PSD.
My question is does Fleetfilter.com sell trans filters for our PSD's? i know that there are 2 types of trans filters for our trucks, the 2x4 and the 4x4. i guess the 4x4 trans has a deeper pan?

also, what fluid does everyone recommend? i'm planning on doing a quick fluid and filter change every 30k miles or so.

thanks in advance.

I got the 4x2 one for my 4x2 truck, and I actually needed the 4x4 version. Good think it was just up the road to the parts store!! The only difference is the length of the pickup, but it's odd that they list the short pickup version for the 4x2s. I wonder when the change happened?? Mine is a 2002.

I run full-syn Mercon V (Mobil1) in mine. GOOD STUFF!! It should last 50k or so. I'll be having mine analyzed at Blackstone before I dump $100 worth of fluid at 30k!

If you tow heavy and may have a chance to overheat it, the synthetic fluid is a little more forgiving and will give you a little "wiggle room" if/when things go wrong.

If you never tow, and don't race or abuse it, dino ATF that meets Mercon III specs will work just fine.

You should completely flush the old stuff out regardless, IMHO. It's easy using the Mark Kovalsky method.

His article says do not use Mercon V rated fluid, the Mobil 1 synthetic is approved for Mercon V. Is it safe and good to use? I just picked up 7 quarts I was going to just drain the transmission pan at every oil change vs. changing out all 20 qts at once.

Oh yeah -- forgot to mention that. Ford came out with a TSB 2 or 3 years ago saying it was okay for use in our trucks. They changed the specs, so it's now okay for the 4R100. Several of us are running it with no problems. I have had it in mine for about a year now.

Yes, they changed MERCON V. It is now compatible with all transmissions that used to use MERCON. There never has been a MERCON III fluid. Never existed.

Yes, of course. It's DEXRON III/Mercon.

just a note on the pan gasket part. when i changed my filter i had to buy it in a kit(filter/pan gasket) but the gasket in the kit was one of those cheap paper gasket types while the one on my pan already was the hard rubber type which is fine to reuse, they dont crush and are okay to use again, unless its leaking. it just makes it easier if for whatever reason you need to drop the pan, then you dont have to deal with scraping the old gasket off and replacing it. or just get a new hard rubber gasket. just my 2 pennys worth
