I just put a deposit down on a 1966 F100. I need to transfer the title, register it, and get insurance today. Can I use the original VIN to find out if there are any leans on the title? I know you guys are the VIN gurus, so would you be able to decode my VIN aswell? (I want to know what came stock on the truck):
The decode on the VIN has one problem...686667 would be a 65 model truck...these trucks...like mine with the 352 has a D engine code...the Y is the 66 model year code for the 352...I bet the VIN is 886 etc...which would be early July 1966...towards the end of this generation of F series...August was changeover time from one year to the next.
Also, my 65 s/n is a 700XXX so I know w/o a shadow of doubt that s/n you posted isnt correct...
You guys are good. I only posted the s/n I was give. I feel bad for the previous owner of the truck because he had personalized plates "66 BEAM" and the truck is a '65 via s/n.

Welcome to FTE
The truck is a 1966, because it has a Y for the 352 engine code, not used in 1965. 1965 used a D instead.
What the owner did was give you wrong serial number of 686,667 by mistake.
It should be 786,667 or most likely 886,667 for a 1966.
the other place to look for total certainty is on topside of the passenger side frame rail about 12" or so in front of the engine crossmember...mine is directly under the edge of the fender apron...about the center of the rail...its in large characters...about 1/4" tall with astericks ( * ) at either end of the VIN
