I hope they'll work, that'd save me likely close to $300. I've got a set of front springs as well. They're out of a diesel Ranger, and are much stiffer. Seem to be the same length though. That'll help offset the extra weight of the V8. Those 2.3L diesels are friggin heavy for their size.
Where did you ever find a rare diesel Ranger?
My neighbour has an older, 83-4 white Ranger diesel with a newly rebuilt engine, it`s been just sitting there for 3-4 years now.......
Dad loves them. He's got two of them licensed right now, is working on a third, and a while ago sold yet another. They're all turbo diesels though. If your neighbours is an 83 or 84 it will be naturally aspirated. 85-87 were turbo.
also, while you have the engine out, you might wanna take the heater box out as you are going to have to either remove it or modify it to fit the engine in there
I always wanted a first gen for this project. Although I like the interior of the 2nd more, I like the body of the 1st more.
I always suspected those headers won't fit, but its worth a shot. They're not as deep as they look.
I'm not sure how I'm going to modify it yet. I've heard of guys cutting the corner out, then putting it back, except inside out. What did you do with yours?
Found another engine today. It's in a 1973 Econoline van. Guy says it runs good. He doesn't want much for the van, so as long as it runs, I think I'm gonna get it off him. If nothing else, it's sealed storage.
well i see that you are in brandon, so if you are ever in winnipeg give me a shout 204-799-6846 ill let you come have a look at my truck and you will understand why the headers won't work.
as for the airbox, again you can come see the hack job i did lol, but yeah, what i did was cut it out and re-fiberglass it
Got the engine out of the donor van. Compression test was okay except for #7, came in at 30psi Think its a bad valve, not too worried, I've got another set of heads which I know are good. Might still use the heads on the engine, depending on valve size.
Changed my mind on the transmission, I'm going with a C4 instead of the AOD for the time being. Mainly because I know this C4 is good, whereas the AOD was questionable. Also the C4 will be simpler and cheaper to install.
I've started getting parts coming my way, intake here, had a cam & lifters already, mounts will be here this week. Dug out the 8" rear end I hope I can use, depending on its width versus the Ranger rear end. Still more to come though. Need more engine stuff, carb (Holley 600 CFM double pumper w/mechanical secondaries, hint hint)
No more pics as of right now, but once I get the engine cleaned up a lil bit I'll take some. Hopefully might sit it in the truck on the weekend, depending if I work Saturday.
Had the 302 sitting in the truck close to where it will be mounted. I see what you mean about those headers drizzit, steering shaft will get in the way.
When I drained the oil out of the engine, it was really milky, so we checked out the bearings. They were okay, but gonna replace them anyway. Pulled the heads off too. 7 of 8 cylinders are in great shape, practically no wear. One cylinder is fairly scarred up though, had a broken oil ring, resulting in two fairly deep gouges in the cylinder wall. Gonna have to be bored out, .040 should do the trick.
