lol... i was thinking the same thing Dave... this is a very neat idea though, i've also had a thought a time or two about doing it, but i'd use a little newer body style. also looking forward to pics!!!
I think if I was going to do a project like this, I would be using the older bodystyle too. I like that look over the newer look, in the rangers.
Lots of guys do this swap, so it cant be that terribly hard. I had a buddy back home do this swap, but he used a 351. Now I dont remember all the details, but after he was done, it worked great, except he didnt figure out the proper clearances for something with the steering, and it couldnt steer very far at all! Sure was fast though lol.
The truck's sitting at the farm now!! I have next week off, so I'm heading out to the farm Sunday to put in some quality time. Hopefully I can have the engine bay completely stripped to the bare necessities, cleaned, and maybe painted. I'd like to get the interior out as well. I have to wait a bit still to get the engine though, but I get the feeling I'll be a while before I'm ready for it. Might get to pick up the engine donor vehicle on the 28th or 29th, depending on the melt.
Hey good luck dude... I'm in the same boat as you. I picked up a '90 ranger about a month ago... I'm working this week on taping/marking all of the wiring and on the weekend I'm going to pull the motor/tranny... I found a buyer for the tranny for $300 so that means so far I've only spent $300 on the truck. Now if I can only find a buyer for the 2.9!
I think I figured it out. If it works, can't say I didn't learn anything today.
My project!!!
Corner view. The busted grille has been replaced already.
The only rust on the outside of the truck.
Crinkle in the box.
The big hole in the seat was for a sub.
The no good 4 cylinder. Actually, it's likely rebuildable.
Look ma, no engine!!
Rusty drivers side floor. Wasn't too thrilled to see that once I pulled up the floor. Might be salvagable though.
Passengers side, by comparision, is quite solid.
The headers I hope I can use. They're actually for a Mustang, but if I don't have any clearance problems, these are going in. Partly because I have them. Mainly because they're badass.
