Headers glowing after heavy tow???

Just wanted to make sure this is normal, towed about 8k up the grapevine, for those of you know where this is, if not, I was around 3500 rpm for over a half hour. Pulled off to use the restroom and randomly looked under the truck and noticed the headers were a dull orange from being so hot. Talked to a few people about this so far and they think its normal, just wanted to see some fellow v10'ers thoughts on this.

Thanks in advance.

That's normal. It's one of the reasons to let the truck idle for a while after a hard pull.

Did it do it on both manifolds at the same place? Or just one was glowing like that?

As long as your block isn't glowing you should be fine. You might looking into upgrading your exhuast for higher flow ability.

Never had a vehicle that didn't glow when worked hard! I had the manifolds on the old 460 glowing bright orange at times.
It is perfectly normal. As Mark said, let it idle a while to cool everything down. Once the truck stops moving, a huge amount of heat will build up under the hood. The radiator fan will pump lots of air to move it along. If conditions allow, I like to pop the hood as well.

And of course, if you can arrange a couple/few minutes cruising along at very light throttle before stopping, you'll never see it at all.

Only two ways I know to eliminate it:
1) Use headers wrapped in fiberglass. The metal will still glow, but you can't see it!
2) Adjust fuel delivery so it runs grossly rich. Of course, that also kills your power and fuel economy, but some folks still do it....

Welcome to the world of heavy pulling on long grades. The first time I towed over Berthood Pass in Co after installing a compressor for my air bags the line from the compressor melted. I had it about 7" form the Y pipe but with low air flow over the pipe there was just to much heat.
